After handling an AR-50 recently I've really been wanting my own .50 BMG rifle! I know that there's a ban on export of .50 cal stuff from the US right now, but was wondering what non-restricted or even restricted .50 cal rifles are currently available in Canada and their landed price (ballpark figure). Several shooting buddies and I have become interested in long-range shooting recently. So far its mostly 7mm Mags and .300 RUM stuff out to about 1000 yards, but we thought it might be fun to take it to the next level. Please feel free to jump in with any comments, opinions or advice. Right now I'm simply at the research stage and testing the waters to see whats available. I did like that AR-50 though! :D

If you are going to spend the kinda of dollars it's going to take to do the .50 cal thing properly, myself I would totally skip the retail rifles and strictly go with a custom maker. You will end up with a rifle fit to yourself, a rifle that will be a tac driver, and have profesional advise a phone call or e-mail message away for not much more money than your going to spend on a factory rifle. Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply, Prarie gun works would be my personal choices in this catagory. The other thing to think about in the .50 cal market is the availability of ammo and components, with these guys you will have a good conection to the materials needed and the advice to do it right. .50's can be a very pricey hobby and going custom is going to save you dollars in the long run just in the knoweldge and support you will have along with an awsome rifle.

Just an Opinion.

Your options are really limited now, since the US imposed ban on the exportation of 50 bmg rifles and support, the choices basically are,
Used ?? , not many guys are letting their 50s go. but you may get lucky.
PGW if they have time to make 1 as I understand they are very busy with a government contract, nice rifles though.
Alberta Tactical Rifle, I build single shot target type rifles, all custom.
Steyr , if you want out of the box, when you can get 1
A fellow in northern BC, ( Toms Lake I think) whose name I can not remember was claiming to be building 50s but I have not seen 1 of his
There is a company in Quebec that builds 50s as well, I have seen 1 and they are nice, I wish I could remember the name though. (Gallin?? maybe)
AND then there are some European/ British offerings that are REALLY expensive ( as if 50s in general are not already pricey)
Ammo and components are also hard to get and expensive, I stock a large inventory of components, bullets, presses, brass primers and some ammo, probably more than every other dealer in Canada combined.
50 BMG is a way of life in this shop.

I've handled the ATR .50 Light, .50 Medium, and .50 "Holy-Sweet-Mother" heavy. You will love whichever you get. Personally and erring on the side of compromise, I'd go for the 30-odd lb rifle. That 65 pounder is a might heavy for trekking the elk meadows.

But if all you want to do is, say, shoot a 24" pumpkin at 2 miles, go for the 65 pounder. ;)

Probably with Bush fanning the paranoia fire with jet engines for a fan, it would not surprise me
That being said the Canadian government would probably deem it a replica , hence a prohibited device

The dreaded Replica class. Hadn't thought of that.
We can't have people running around around with non-guns, can we?

Have you considered .338 Lap. I know its not a .50, but depending on how the election turns out the odds are that you'll never have to turn it in, for now it's still considered a "sporting" (?!?!?) calibre, and its about 3/4 of a .50 - price-wise too!

The Lapua , like the 408 Cheytac are 2nd and 3rd runners up. Yes they are capable of longer range than many sporting cartridges, but there just isn't much comparison between these and the 50.
That being said the Lapua is far less costly to shoot and is still capable of longer range than most can realisticaly make use of.

0.338 Lapua ammo is also hard to get.

Why can't somebody import M33 ( I think...) ammo from IMI ( Israel). One member of this board managed to legally import 5000 rounds from Israel. Unfortunately he won't sell any.

So, dealers, what do you say about this ? If a single guy can do it, why can't you guys ?

If the things remain status quo as they are I will try to import it by myself.

I wish I had picked up the Steyr 50 BMG at P&D while it was there. My "toy fund" was a good deal bigger at the time and the price seems to have gone UP since.
I've had the 50 bug ever since being at the 50 cal shoot at Genesee.
