I have access to a lathe and have fairly good knowledge of it use. I was looking at making my own 50 cal bullets for the 50bmg as they are too expensive to buy. What alloy of copper do i need to find or is best???

thanks

I really have no idea, but what I know is you can have a bullet «analysed», with an electronic microscope, that will be giving you the components of the material. Here at Sherbrooke University, I believe it would cost you 150$. (I did it for a laser cutting machine lens debris).

Probably the same thing is possible in BC. Call at engineering dept and see what happens...

I'd cut 'em with grooves, remember what happened with the first barnes w/o grooves, copper fouling from hell. Must be a fairly soft copper they use.

Unless it is a CNC lathe, you are wasting your time. There is simply no way you could cut bullets accurately enough on a manual machine to keep weights consistent. And if the weights aren't reasonably consistent, you are wasting your money.

Contact Brobee on this forum, he probably has the most experience having bullets turned. But he has spent a fair bit of money learning to do it. I don't think that turning your own bullets to save money is going to work out all that well.

Do a "50BMG" search in the Exchange of Factory Ammo and Reloading Equipment in the EE section; a few options available for bullets.

50BMG = expensive
you bought the wrong gun if you were looking to save money ;)

What type of bullets are you looking for? Match grade bullets, regardless of if they are made or bought are going to be on the pricey side ($3.50 a pc?) If you're just looking to do some 'plinking' with 'cheaper' bullets, military fmj can be found for around $2/bullet.
