Hey all. I have a buddy looking for a modern sporting rifle in 50 caliber. Im not up on modern reproductions so i ask here. What is available as a decent hunting rifle between 50-70 and 50-120 or any other modern 50s? Willing to look at anything thats not a chiappa

All i can really find is big horn armoury. Definitely not cheap. Hed like to stay under $2500 if possible but willing to go higher for high quality.
My thought was to restore and rebarrel an old remington rolling block but he wants new and modern and 50cal sporting rifle. Not a bmg or ar platform. He wants to use it for hunting.

Most people that I have met who buy anything over a .45-70 or a .50-70, like a .50-120 for example, usually end up selling it.

You might want to go to your local black powder clubs and talk to people. If anyone owns a rifle in the cartridges you are interested in you can ask if you can try it out.

I have had a number of 1873 Springfield's in .45-70 and the .45-70-500 cartridge does get your attention.

I am looking for a Pedersoli 1873 Springfield carbine in .45-70, but most of the cartridges will be downloaded for trail walks.

The exception being the Heffley Creek Rendezvous Cartridge Trail walk where the farthest target this year was about 560 meters.

Does he just want a 50cal, and isn't picky beyond that? Or is he specifically looking for one of these old school rifles in a modern reproduction?

You can get 500s&w barrels for TC encore cant you? That seems like an affordable way to get into a 50cal...

For $2500 you might be able to buy or build a 505gibbs or 50 Alaskan too?

Winchester/Miroku made a small number of their highwalls in .50-90. I used to own one but sold it a few years ago. With 95gr of powder and a 698gr bullet it was a thumper. Hard to find but they should be worth $2000 or maybe a bit less used if you can find one.

Chris.

Hes not to picky beyond a newly made 50cal rifle for hunting. Rimmed is a preference but not necessarily a deal breaker. Hed go for a 500sw if he could find one. The problem with the itialian remakes is some are chiappas and rebranded. Hes had 2 chiappa sharps style guns break down on him. A winchester hiwall would be perfect for him.
As for case length hes not too concerned as it will be a deer rifle mostly and possibly a black bear if i can talk him into going with me sometime. Recoil isnt an issue. Hes fine with my 458wm and 500gr bullets

Why not a CZ550 .500 Jeff, is he stuck on cowboy guns? Also a nice Sako .500 Jeffery on the EE right now. Leaves every round discussed here in the dust and quality, repeating, modern sporting rifles.

Hes just stuck on a 50. Rolling block bolt or lever doesnt matter. 500 jeffery sounds good to me lol little over kill for close range deer lol. Ill run it passed him

I’d sooner shoot a CZ or Sako .500 than a .50-140 with archaic stock design, or a .500 S&W Handi rifle, for recoil comfort despite launching two and a half times the energy of the .50-140 downrange. If it’s only about owning a .50+ bore without much understanding of the ballistics coax him into a muzzle loader.

I have a 50-70 roller and a Shiloh 50-90. A buddy had a Italian roller many years ago, in 50-140. Loved that gun and was very accurate, won a few black powder shoots with it. Sorry to see it go. As Ardent said, it is hard to beat a modern gun in a Jeffries. Load it up or down, your call. He will likely be the only one in camp with one!
