50 years hunting to get a mature 4x4 mule deer? It can happen.

Quite the opposite, counting one side goes hand in hand with our regs, many require a certain amount of points in order to target mature animals. There’s no need to try and could both sides of a buck or bull as it moves through the bush to gauge it, one side determines maturity just as well as counting two. Then in plain hunting parlance I prefer 5x6 elk to an 11 point, it’s a tad more descriptive anyhow and makes perfect sense.

And congratulations to MD!

Are there minimum point requirements per antler or just total?

Very nice Michel !! :d

That is a very nice animal.

Thank you very much 'Boo. I was going to mention that it is not very often that I have been able to get two deer in one season. It reminded me of the day in October some years back I got an LEH doe in 5-14 in the morning and called you and you said "do you want a two-point buck too?" Then you took me to the field where there were what? 100-plus mule deer grazing? You'd been watching that two-point with very long tines and after several hours of watching that herd, he stood up and came within range and we ended up with him in the pickup. That was not only two deer in one season, it was two in one day. It was a Friday the 13. Not a lucky day for those deer.

Yes, remember though that 2 point was an anomaly. I think he had as much mass and length as a lot of typical 4 point bucks and those long tines of his were like 12" daggers. I personally really like the "strange" deer more than the typicals.

a couple years ago I harvested a mulie in 5-2 that lost one antler somewhere along the line before he bumped into me and my .303. He had a real nice 4pt antler on the other side though :)

Only one antler, for instance one area I moose hunt requires either 3 brow tines minimum or 10 points total (one side/antler). It’s only to gauge maturity and reduce overharvest, and no need to count both sides to do that. Then naturally the 4x4 buck etc follows out west.

gday mate, i really enjoyed your story and am glad you connected! please dont wait another 50 for another nice buck!
i missed the part about which rifle you used foor the succesful hunt!
cheers!

Good for you. I like the colour of the antlers and the fact it has chunks for tree stuck to the bases.

It's a custom 280 built on a WWII Brno M98 action. A buddy gave it to me so I don't know the brand of barrel used, but it has a plastic stock, Sako trigger, jeweled bolt and hinged floor plate. It is shooting 140 grain Federal Trophy bonded tip ammunition.

But truth be told, and I'm a gun nut as much as many here; both deer could have been killed with a 30-30 out of a Winchester 94 with iron sights.

Truth be told that Is hunting though.... Not shooting from 500 yards away, You hunted the Deer.... ultimate challenge in my Book and i wouldnt want success to come any other way.
theres something about stalking up an shooting a Deer in close quaters, something that popping a big one from 500yards just doesnt give ya..... but thats just my opinion.

nice choice of cartridge in the 280!

Congrats Michel on the nice Mule deer as well as the earlier blacktail.
No deer hunting for me this year. The fire put a damper on that, but our son is currently on the island looking for a Roosevelt Elk.
