.500 barrel blank...found one, 510 whisper in the works

Trailboss sure makes a lot of pressure for the velocity given. Have you given any thought to SR-4759? If you can keep the velocity down where you want it then I'll bet it'd be more accurate. I've fiddled with Trail Boss now and then and have had decent groups at 100m, but terrible vertical at 200m. There was just too much velocity variation.

there are a few powders on the list, including WC 296

There is a small amount of loading data available for this set up, but it gets into a grey area with the heavier cast slugs..........

@yodave, looks like a fun project.

In looking at your cartridge mockup, one thing jumps out at me... how will the cartridge be headspaced? There's no belt no shoulder and no rim, therefore the only thing left is the case mouth (like a .45 ACP). You'll have to keep this in mind when you design the chamber (figure out where the "case mouth stop" needs to go), when you trim the brass (make sure you get the case length correct, within a reasonable tolerance), and when you load the ammo (don't crimp the case mouth enough to prevent it from hitting your chamber's "case mouth stop").

If you'll be shooting black powder, I wonder how a casemouth-headspaced cartridge works with BP? (is that sore of design more susceptible to powder fouling?)

Your right, its going to headspace just like a majorly up scaled 9mm......so case length is going to be key, but at the same time there is enough taper in the case that just neck sizing the case will ensure that the case sits tight against the boltface. The 50 WSM has been done before so there is a wee bit of info out there on the intraweb, albeit a few years old now.

The chamber reamer is 1.700 inches with a trim to length of 1.665, I wanted to change this a little bit and gain a bit of case capacity. I have to make a few other dummy rounds up so I can figure out my freebore as well. M8 bullets give a OAL of 3.300 inches, which woud almost dictate a long action be used, my cast bullet is sitting at 2.6 something and would work in a short action.......so I have to decide. Because the case is half the length of the loaded round I can eject fired case out of a short action with ease, but to unload a loaded round I would have to pull the bolt out........

Where did you source an 850gr mold? That can't fit in a standard mold block, can it?

custom mold maker in the US, I opted for a 3 cavity gas check mold and all I can say is that my mold rest/guide really pays for itself when casting with this mold. The lead pot goes down pretty fast to lol...........

Yodave,
With enough mandrels and steps, you could open up the 300WSM neck and shoulder and get approx. .4" more case length. That should be a very good thing for powder capacity.:D
Never mind the .060" ( or so) difference in body length of the now unavailable 7WSM over a .270WSM case.

I'll make a couple of dummy rounds and study them over a beer..........after that if I opt to go that route I'll just stock up on cream of wheat........

Now there is something I didn't know. I have been dying to build a 510 Whisper. Got to shoot one suppressed when I was down at one of the silencer shoots in the US a few years ago. VERY COOL round. I actually have a compete round but never figured out where to get a barrel.

Start digging for load data.................

So far I have the following:
.50 cal barrel blank (38 inches long 1 in 15 twist)
510 whisper reloading dies (2 sets)
510 whisper chamber reamer
510 whisper go and no go gauges
A dozen or so 338 lapua magnum S&B cases (need more........hint hint)
Savage 110 30-06 sacrificial rifle

Have 2 338 lapua magnum savage bolt faces on order as well as RCBS shell holder..........

Need to order the tactical stock from Richards microfit to fit my action, also have to decide on single shot or repeater..........
