Looking for direction. Who has some .500 S&W ammo for sale? Just purchased a revolver, want to buy some ammo with plans to reload the brass. Any suggestions? Local shop says they cannot get it. Also looking for brass and components.

i ordered S&W 460 Magnum which is a step down from your 500 brass directly from Bullet Barn.
they had to special order it in from Starline but i got it and its high quality stuff, didnt take more than a month i think.

as for ammo, SFRC is showing 300g and 500g in stock in Hornady.
Bullseye has a couple flavors in stock - Federal 325g and some Hornady300g.
Cabela's has 300g Hornady but not in stock online, but some stores are showing stock.

Avoid Hornady ammo some of it has soft brass, grabbed some a couple of years ago, 3 out of 5 shots had the primer blow out. Phoned Hornady about it and they said they would replace the ammo, because they had a batch of soft brass. Didn't seen interested in warning people about it.

Just buy the supplies and dive right into the reloading. The factory ammo options are all hellishly expensive and a hellishly expensive way to get a few casings.

Can any of you 500 S&W guys spare a couple spent brass? I need it to use as a lube cutter.

Please PM me if you can help me out.

Thanks,

M

When I first got my 500 S&W, ;) a few years back, ammo and components of any sort were generally in short supply. Most of the initial brass I was able to obtain was Hornady. While I can't say I ever had issues with the brass being soft, when using heavy charges of the likes of H110, I did find the ignition to be a problem and the odd round showing unburnt powder. Later manufacturers of brass corrected this by making the brass to accept large rifle primers. I've set the old Hornady brass aside for lighter load applications and use Starline for the heavier loads, with H110. Solved the problem for me.
On a related note, with the top end loads, and even with the stock Hogue grips, I found the 500 has the ability to inflict pain, at both ends. I modified an old set of Jordan Trooper stocks by Herritt's to fit it. While you are still aware you have a 'handful', I found the recoil effects now easier to handle. The beauty I've found with this 'hand cannon' is whether shooting cast or jacketed, hot or light loads, all seem to shoot accurately. My groups did start to show signs of opening up a little in hot loads with bullet weights of 500gr.
