500 S&W and 454 casull guys do you ever trim your brass?

I have been told in person by experienced reloaders that it will not be necessary to trim straight walled brass. Some online say they trim for consistency one time only. I have measured some of my brass and it is all fairly consistent.

I see the occasional dissenting opinion on the internet. Is this just guys on the web running their mouths?*

* I appreciate the irony here.

While I don't have those two calibers, reloading 44mag or 357mag I periodically trim... reloading these works the brass three times (resize, bell, crimp) per load and results in case stretching. It is inevitable that a trimming becomes necessary... more frequently if you care about consistent crimping.

Thanks New Camper.

My 500 S&W is a single shot rifle, so slightly inconsistent crimps may not present the danger that they would in a revolver.

I have yet to trim my 500mag brass. I've put 3 or 4 thousand rounds through 300 pieces of brass (250 hornady, 50 winchester, all were brand new) and haven't noticed any issues with the brass length although i haven't really measured it. I may need to start annealing the brass though as i usually put a heavy crimp since i am shooting them in a revolver.

Thanks Spawn, that makes me feel a bit better.

I bought a new trimming setup today, and I was hoping I would not have to return it to get one that will work for these cartridge (2hr drive into town)
