There's a number of 500 Handi rifles out there; wondering if anyone's taken anything with one of them? I think it would make an ideal 'truck gun' for those targets of opportunity, short and handy and capable of enough velocity for the 100-200 yard shots typical of the territory I frequent.

The game laws here REQUIRE expanding bullets, so that rules out hard cast. Has anyone had any real-world experience with the 350 grain XTP's, or any of the .500 muzzle loader bullets in this gun?

i have never had one in a 500 s&w should make a good truck gun. i know for a fact that the bullet will take down a deer. hell my uncle has even shot deer with a 357 mag. i bet you cout even take bear with it. the only problem is its a little bit exspencive!

Don't get me wrong, I love the Handi in all it's configurations. I have several. The 500, though - I bought it because it's just plain cool and a ton-a-fun to shoot at the range, and in the gopher patch. 330 grain cast (for the 50 AE) over light charges of Trail Boss are an absolute hoot; like lobbing grenades downrange with a soft 'whump' instead of a sharp 'crack,' and a lengthy delay before the impact.

All lead bullets will expand if you hit something firm like bones, maybe not on a whitetails shoulder though, I read an article about softening the noses of hardcast bullets, on leverguns.com I think. Might be worth looking into.

Prosper, cast bullets are perfectly legal here in AB.

As for your 500, any bullet from that canon will work just fine on deer. It's a half inch across for crying' out loud!!!!

If an animal runs away from that rifle, the problem won't be with the bullets.

.440 gr hollow point cast bullets.

You can fill the cavity with paraffin for even more dramatic expansion effect.

PM me if you'd like a few I casted a bunch with round and hex cavity....

I have not taken any game with my 500S&W TC Katahdin. I loaded up some Hornady FTX 300gr. bullets that look like they will knock down anything that walks N.A. I would think any HP would work well also.

Russ...

BIG GAME PROHIBITIONS

It is unlawful to

set out, use or employ any of the following items for the purpose of hunting big game:
  • ammunition of less than .23 calibre,
  • ammunition that contains non-expanding bullets,

Do they consider hard cast bullets to be expanding?

500 S&W is a Kick Ass Deer Gun. (max i would say 150 yards)

And The lead Bullet Splat Nice when you hit a Deer. So Would not be an expanding bullet?

i think it's more less FMJ they dont want you to use.

I don't want to be a stick in the mud but if your cast bullets "splat" when you hit an animal something is very wrong. When making bullets I match the alloy to the velocity and game, so you get some expansion and err on the side of deep penetration. Even my softest pure lead bullets don't "splat" when they hit anything but steel.
Folks should check to see if the cylinder is long enough before buying 700grain bullets for the .500...also chambers/throats should be checked on H&Rs and other such guns for a bullets that sticks out of the case by .700" or so....Ben
