Shooting the .500 awhile back, awesome toy - have no rational reason for needing one, but I WANT one! :dancingbanana:

A number of years back, my buddy picked one up and invited me out for the test shoot. Long story short, after seeing how well it shot, I decided ;)I 'needed' one.

It seems to shoot well with anything I've ever 'fed' it. Hot loads, light loads, cast bullets or jacketed, doesn't seem to make any difference. One change I did make is the grips. With top end loads, it has the ability to inflict pain, at both ends. The Hogue grips it came with didn't seem to help. I modified a set of Jordan Trooper stocks I had made by Herritt's for the S&W model 29. When you touch one off, you still know you have a 'handful' but it made the recoil with the hotter loads bearable.

Nice! Everyone smiles when the big hand cannons touch off....the shooter, the spectators, the RO...the sales person selling the ammo...lol

I've only shot the 500/460 a littlest bit but always think..."I'm shooting half inch groups!...one round at a time"

I hear ya! :D

I was at the range with a buddy that has one as well, I shot one in each hand... that was fun.

Same result yup, came up from the range to the store front and everyone was asking WTF was that!

They are a lot of fun, not so bad to feed if you reload.

Can't imagine the cost of putting a lot of rounds through one.

I'm just going to say you are all better men than I. Seeing that makes me whimper in pain already. The biggest I've shot is a 454 Casull, and I don't think I would ever shoot more than a cylinder in a day.

Reloading your own keeps the cost down to somewhere between 50 cents to a buck a round depending on your bullet and powder choices.

Because of the weight of the gun I actually found the .500 handgun to be less of a smack than the .454Casull.

My S&W 629 44 Magnum has a more painful recoil than my 500 S&W or my 460 S&W, and I only shoot full loads. Plus, its way more fun to shoot. Nothing destroys a watermelon or 2 litre like a 500 S&W.

Love my 500mag! Really enjoy watching others shoot it for the first time too. i've put about 1700 rounds through mine by now, i need new grips as the handle is starting to rip through the hogue grips lol.

Here is a shot of the various bullets i cast for it, the 700gr and 375gr spire points are my favourites.

The 500 is more pleasant than a 454 .......long as you have wrists big enough for the torque combined with recoil . I got 3 shots out of a 454 Casull before I handed it back . I can shoot 30 or 40 rounds out of my 500 . Just takes a couple cylinders to remind you what the recoil is like . I once shot 20 rounds off just to piss off the instructor in the class above me . Concrete vibrates and dust rises !

i keep reading this, i must get my hands on one! what gun did you shoot the 454 in? ideally i'd love a 460mag so i can shoot all 3 but i suspect the weight of it would mess with the recoil from the 454 unless i got the 5" model.

Here most of what I 'feed' my 500. For cast, these I get from a friend and another 500 S&W owner that's hot & heavy into casting.

 Sorry about the poor quality photo. If I had to pick one of the bunch as a favorite cast bullet, it would likely be the 440gr with GC.

And for jacketed

With these, one seems to do as well as any of the others. I did try some 500gr. Hornadys but found my groups started to open up a bit so I never bothered with them. Out of these, my 'favorite', I'd have to say the 350gr Sierra JHP.

i got a box of the 400gr sierra jsp's when i got the gun and ended up drilling out the lead to get the bullet down to 275gr hoping to make a massive bang using h110 but it didn't work as good as i had hoped. i pretty much run cast only in mine for cost reasons though, my reloads cost 35 cents give or take 5 cents.

In the hotter loads, I use H110 as well. Initially I had the odd round that didn't seem to be getting sufficient ignition from large pistol and even large pistol magnum primers. At that time, for those 'warmer' loads using H110, I went to Starline brass as they were made to accept large rifle primers. Problem solved and I 'believe' now most manufacturers go with large rifle size primers. I keep the older Hornady brass that take large pistol primers for the lighter loads using other powders such as Unique for example.

i've got a 6.5" 500 Mmmmagnum. Fun gun. Last week I shot over *100 rounds* out of it. Felt fine after shooting... because I reload. With a load of TrailBoss and 400gr boolits you can shoot all day for cheap. (I also load with 4227+cast)
I let a guy shoot a few rounds and I think he expected massive recoil, but got what feels like a .38spl. He still had a smile, though!

If you reload, then it's a very versatile shooter.
