500 S&W

Saw the 500 at my local gun shop. Too much gun for me. If I want to shoot 400 gr rounds at 1700 fps, I think I'll stick with a 45-70 out of a Marlin.
To each his own...

I would really like to have one of these. Great for bear defense. Too bad no handgun hunting in Canada. Thanks alot Paul you #######!!!

I legally carry handguns for defense and have held but never shot a 500 S&W.

My largest most powerful handgun is a Ruger SRH in 454 Casull and I find it to be as big as I would want to carry in a hip holster.

I have seen pictures of a S&W Custom Shop 500 S&W with a 6 1/2" barrel that I would like to handle. Maybe the right size...

Here's a link to it http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/...selected=tech&isFirearm=Y&parent_category_rn=

I think a lot of you fellows would not be so taken with a 500 if you actually shot one a few times . I know I didn't think much of it nor my son and another fellow who actually had his hand bruised by it after shooting only 5 rounds without gel gloves . I honestly believe it could cause permanant nerve damage to your hand if used any amount . It certainly isn't a gun you would take out for target plinking nor is it even close to practical for target shooting . Ammo is about $4 per pop too BTW .

i already have permanant nerve damage to both my hands from work :D so i guess all i have to worry about is the cost of ammo re-loading time

500 s&w

After shooting a full cylinder out of this cannon I would wait for awhile before spinning another 5 out of it. But in bear country adrenalin would be pretty high so the recoil would not be so noticeable. :p

Shot one with 350 grain factory loads. What a blast! I am in it's owners everlasting debt. It's brisk, sure, but it comes straight back, no flip. Sweet double action. It is heavy, would want to carry it on my hip, but a shoulder rig would be fine, (if your 6' 4", I'm not) I found it more pleasant to shoot than a 4" .44 mag. I just can't see owning one if you can't hunt with it. I'd love to, but I have limited resourses, so I'll get something I can shoot more often without a morgage on the ammo.

A friend of mine recently purchase a 6.5" Performance Centre .500. I had an opportunity to shoot some factory 350's out of it and it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. As previously stated a break is required between cylinders and if I was shooting more than couple cylinders full I would say gloves are compulsory. It was still fun though! We're just waiting for some 440 grainers!

That is the model that I would like to look at if I where to purchase one. If I where to give one of these a try I think I would go for the 460 though. That way I could still shoot my 45 Colt's and 454 Casull. Jae-Bok Young supplies a 420gr WFNGC that should work awesome in it.

Can you tell me where your buddy bought his and how much it cost?

Camp Cook,

I believe my buddy had Chilcotin Guns in Williams Lake bring in peformance centre 500. I think it cost +$2500.  I will be talking to him Wednesday night and will correct this if I'm mistaken.

I'm not familar with the Performance Centre 500, any details? I have a 500 S&W and with bullet weights up to about 400grs, its not too bad to handle. With full house 440gr cast GC or the 500gr JFP Hornady's, it has the ability to inflict pain at 'both ends'. The Hogue grips are pretty thin in the hump area & thats where the 'pain' starts. I had a set of Herrett's Jordan Trooper stocks for an N frame S&W that I modified and that helped considerably. Spreads the pain over a larger area I guess. It's still a handfull but bearable. The reason for the heavy bullets & hot loads is eventually, I'd like to 'use' the 500 on an Alaska Moose hunt.:)
