I have one, an 8 3/8". I shoot a variety of about four cast bullets from 350grBB - 440gr GC, both heavy & light loads. The jacketed bullets I use are primarily a 'modified' Speer 325gr HP, Hornady 350gr XTP/Mag, Sierra 350gr JHP and the Hornady 500gr.
With the hotter loads, especially using the heavier bullets, recoil can be somewhat harsh, even with the Hogue grips. I've altered a set of Jordon Trooper stocks by Herritt's and that seems to make it bareable.
Hard for me to comment on using the 6 1/2" as I've never seen one let alone shoot one but I would venture a guess that recoil 'could' be even a little more, 'noticeable'

My friend @ the range had the 6/12" with no compensator and mine is the 8 3/8" with the compensator. Mine can shoot 25 meter x & 10 ring with hornady 350 grain and his with the same bullet hit's the dirt.
P.S. This is the world most deadliest hand cannon so you got to ask your self...

I'd definately say if you are going to buy it be set to reload for it.

Inline with Satain's comment, that's the only thing I really hate about the 500. The only thing I see it accomlpishes is a MUST for protective eye ware.
And pdubois64's comment, neither of my heros, Clint or Elmer 'met'the 500. When my buddy got his he invited me out to the range to take part in the test, which I accepted. At the firing line I looked at it and said " I know what I can do with the 29 in 44Mag, but what would I do with this"? "Besides, this is the biggest 'chunk' of stainless steel I've held since I retired from the pulp mill. He had some 'moderate' loads of about 1000 f/sec with a 440grGC bullet and directed me to 'squeeze' off five from a rest, and at about a 20 yard range, which I did. When he brought the target back, he said "I'm keeping this". There was one big ragged hole, about 1 1/4" in diameter. I NEED ONE!!! Big, can be painful but I love the results, that's why I got mine.

The compensator is NOT an option. Do not buy the gun without it!
I'd probably have eaten the gun if it did not have one on it LOL.

One thought about compensators......................
It keeps the barrel down, therefore driving recoil energy into your shoulder causing what looks like to be a helluva wack.
Without a comp, the recoil energy would roll up through the arms and over your (hopefully over) head.
