Does anyone use and or hunt with a 500 sw. I'm thinkin of buying one a hnr handi rifle (for bear hunting) as I'd have no other use for one but I need a reason for every gun purchase says the wife. Looking over the performance is there any real world gain over a rifled barreled 12ga shotgun. I don't want to start a bear defense thread. Just want to actually know if this caliber is worth the hype and I love bear meat and wish to take bears using various guns/bows all info I could find was out of a 8" barrel and a 350gr bullet at 1975fps and. 700gr bullet at 1200 fps seem like they'd be deadly short range. Any comments about this caliber would be great thanks

It's a very versatile round with lots of stopping power. To really get a lot of use out of it, you'd need to reload and/or have a fat wallet.

Hornady has a some awesome loadings:

350gr out of the muzzle [Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)] 1700/2246 and at a 100yrds it's still got 1289/1297

500gr at the muzzle 1425/2254 and 1164/1505 at a 100yrds.

This out of a 8.5" barrel! Don't think a shottie can keep up with the 500S&W :)

There are even 700gr loadings floating about. For hunting T-Rex I think ;)

I just shot my 500S&W Encore (15" barrel) at the range Friday, she's a BEAST. Lots of thump, flash and muzzle rise. Was kinda expecting that all in a shorty combination but the reality was even more :D

I'm lookin at the hnr handi rifle as I think itd be cheap fun. I'd like to take a bear with my 50 cal blackpower as well 338gr bullet at 1900fps so I think the 500 will be just as fun and reloading is much faster

Actually most 12 gauge slug loads have around 23-2400 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle, and some, like the Remington Buckhammer load, have about 2900 ft lbs at the muzzle. At the ranges most bear hunts over bait take place, the 12 gauge with a rifled barrel and slugs offers a very real advantage over the .500 S&W.

Yeap, the Handi-rifle is a great way to get into the 500S&W for cheap. Only think I've heard is some of the factory sights on those rifles don't hold-up well to the recoil but that may or may not be true. Easy enough to fix if it is. The 700gr loadings would be an awesome force. I've read the 500S&W has already been used for hunting big dangerous game in Africa so bear should be taken easily with proper placement.

"...500 S&W for cheap..." That'd be an oxymoron. Assuming you could find ammo in the first place.
"...any real world gain over a..." Nope. That's no reason not to buy one though. But find the ammo and/or brass, locally, first.

Did you just buy the barrel for your TC or did you buy the gun that way? I am kind of looking for a 500s&w barrel for me TC PH.
