500 vs 870

I have always had 870's and can fully gut on in about 5 min in the dark (trigger assembly removed) - I have never tried to take apart a 500 I have read that it can be tricky - might be something to consider - my 2 cents...

I've asked around a bunch, and today shot trap with a guy using an 870... The 870 action stuck closed after a shot at one point. The cartridge had been discharged, But the pump wouldn't come back 'till the gun was stock-bumped on the ground (Keeping the muzzle safely down range the whole time, of course). I've never seen the Mossberg jam up or malfunction in any way. I'm buying one next week.

im also looking for a shotgun and am looking at possibly getting a combo kit. Is one easier to change over than the other?

Thread revival.

To jaarsma: Neither 870 or 500 series are difficult to field strip, or to change out barrels. Not a factor, once you've done it the once.

To OP wildparty: A new 870 express is not an older Wingmaster. Older WM's are slick and well put together ... Express?, not in the same league.

Mossberg's have always been solid working shotguns. QC has been more consistent over the years than Rem's track record. My older 500 slug gun is a gem. My bud's new 590 ... ditto.

For a real treat of a field shotgun? ... Model 12 Winchester.

I have a 590 A1, and an older, modified wingmaster. The only real important difference is the safety. For a new shooter, the visible top safety of the Mossberg might be a good idea. The A1 version is worth the extra cost.
