500 yards with a .308? possible?

WOW!!!

You are sure looking for it to hit the fan with that one. ;)

Pretty much anything chambered in .308 is gonna out shoot your abilities at that range unless you are a seasoned shooter. Spend as much as you can I guess, sky is the limit.

Oh yeah, don't forget your reloading equipment.

Maybe a trip through the precision rifle forum will give you a good idea of what is available.

If you have to ask that question then you are probably not skilled enough to shoot tight groupings at 500 yds, even if your rifle was capable of putting them all into a .308" wide hole. I don't mean to bash you, because I can honestly and proudly say that I (along with 99% of other shooters) cannot shoot tight groupings at 500 yds. I have a hard enough time at 200 yds.

Its possible... killed a whitey this year at 550 yards. She ran about 10 yards before going down, and ranged her from where the shot was fired to her and it was 562 yards.

Barnard action, 30" custom premium hand laped barrel, good smith to chamber it, good stock $2800 to $3000 Reloading equipment $600 The gun will shoot better than most shooters can hold it, oh forgot $ 1000+ for good scope

I know its a matter of practice, and some big fan's of the .308 and its abilities. Is it mostly in the scope?

It is all YOU!!!In so many ways.

Much more than practice.Knowledge is pretty dang important I would say, load development is up there as top contender for accuracy.

500 yard beginner rig?

Savage 10fp in 308, or precision carbine, high price of $800 (estimate) add another $800 bushnell 4200 6-24x50 tactical scope, add another $100 for good burris signature zee rings...go nuts and have fun! That rig would teach you how good YOU can shoot.

Mine loves 168gr hornady bullets and varget powder....500 meters is easy....I set up 10inch metal plates and let my kids smack them over one by one.

If by chance you live in Alberta I'd certainly be up to teaching how to shoot that far. I'm by no means an expert, but I can teach the basics required to get oyu accurately 500m out. 5-6" groups (10 shot) out that far are certainly possible with 308.

I don't care to be turning my scope 15+ notches to go from 300 to 500 yards? I'd like a flat shooter. Whats a nice scope for longer ranges?

trick is, can you group with about 4-5 feet of bullet drop figured in- the bullet drop with a 180 for a zero of 250 yards is about 44 inches to reach 400 yards then you'd have to dope the wind as well- personally, i just sneak into range

hate to disagree with you fellas but i have owned some 308's that to say they could hit the ground with their hat would be a complement. a tip to you start building from a trigger up. ;)

I had a .308 for years, it wouldn't hit anything beyound 300 yards... just seemed about maxed out with the 3200 elite scope on it?

That's the rifle however, and NOT the cartridge.
I have quite a few rifles in 308 that will shoot very tight at 500, and even have one hunting rifle in 308 that will do it!:D
Define "tight"?
A clay bird on the 500 meter berm is in serious trouble with my iron sighted match rifle when I'm strapped into the sling, but it doesn't shoot as well as my Fclass rig with its 9-36X scope!

that's b/c you didn't have enough come-ups on it- look at the bullet drop between 300 and 400 yards- had you had enough elevation in the turret to come up 4 FEET, you probably could have hit somethng- i've got a 4x12 x40 scopechief on one of mine and it'll do 600 if i add enough elevation - which is a heck of a shot for a LEVER - it won't group worth a s** , but somewhere on a 6 foot target, you'll find a hole- it's a savage 99

On my .308 it takes about 25 clicks to go from 300m to 500m. It takes what it takes.
Also, bullets arc, they don't fly straight like a laser beam.
