Hey, anyone mind measuring the dimensions of a 5000 primer box? I already got my measurments for powder. This weekend i will be building myself 2 reloading supplies cabinets as specified on here : www.cdnshootingsports.org/legal_info_for_reloaders.html

It says i may have 12kg of powder and my box was designed in a way to fit this pretty tight. For primers it specifies 10kg. I want to make a nifty cabinet, that is not too big for nothing. Measurments in inches and weight of primer boxes would be appreciated .

I am ready to get into reloading, just want to make sure everything is adequate before the supplies come in.

Hey Marty. Welcome to reloading!

I can see how you'd be confused, but Mr. Burlew was first talking about the old and still current Act, but then starts discussing the new, proposed and as yet unratified Act. The new proposed Act is the one that is talking about the 10kg max which includes powder AND primers - not a 10kg max of primers.

I just use a big plastic ammo box, locked, marked "Explosives" for primers. It'll hold 5000 primers easily.

Thanks for the info!
10kg does not seem like much. I plan on having 8lbs of VV N320 and 8lbs of BL-c2 on hand. That leaves me just a bit less than 2.8 kg for primers. Are primers heavy or does it take a s***load to get to 2kg?
I have plenty of plano green plastic ammo boxes i sure wouldn't mind using them, i did find cssa blog a bit confusing. Is there a real practical and legal need for having wood cabinets?

For powder i want to keep my plan, i wanted to make a project out of making my cabinet to pass time. For primers i can pass and use the cheap/easy route

the idea behind wood is it won't build up a static charge when handled, but i doubt very much it would every go off.

here is 15,000 primers in CCI packaging (accept one),

it measures, 9"(tall) X 10"(wide) X 6"(deep) maybe 5 lbs tops most of which is the packaging.

Thanks Spawn, very kind of you to take the time to check this out for me.
If i do go the wooden cabinet route, i now know how big to build.

no problem,

if this new bs change happens, then i will empty each type of primer, so i am measuring just the explosive, and not the metal, packaging, etc.

i just measure a large rifle mag primer and a small pistol magnum, the large was .4gr and the small, .2gr
that means 385,791 large primers (10kg) or 771582 small primers (10kg).
if you measure the whole primer then you only get 38579 large and 57154 small primers.
yes, i'm board cleaning brass :)

Now reduce by the weights of spent primers to get the total. No use including the weight of the primer cup.

Yes, 10kg aggregate is absurd. Maybe this is one of the reasons the new Act hasn't been ratified yet. They are afterall, consulting with all interested parties right? And if memory serves, the new Act includes loaded / factory ammo in the new max. Time to build a detached magazine I guess...

all i measured was the primer powder, no anvil, cup, packaging. approx .4gr for large primers, .2gr for small.

I never mentionned wanting only 5000 primers. It's a reference for measurments, if 5000 measures X size, i know how to build the cabinet so it can hold my desired amount. Primers are sold by the 5000.

lebaron will let you buy 1k, or even 100 primers.

Thanks!!
My reloaded ammo will be packed with my factory ammo. These are in a green lee construction tool box with an HD lock on it. I will simply get plastic ammo case (like the blue ones from berry) so i can know which is which.
As for the dies, equipment etc... I bought myself a metal work bench at CT. It's 48" long, wooden top so i can bolt on the press, upper shelves with doors and side drawers. It should be plenty enough for what i wish to reload.
My wife is still ok with this, my sports shooting equipment closet downstairs evolved into taking control of the whole room!
I am planning buying primers by the 5000's from one of the sponsors here, i have dealt with too much disapointment from the local shops already.

I think the idea of making it out of wood is so that in case of a fire it will easily split open if the contents ignite instead of a violent explosion if tightly enclosed. The idea behind copper or brass hardware instead of steel is to minimize the shrapnel in case of an explosion.

I still haven't figured out who buy primers 100 at a time, someone does obviously as that is why you see the most. I couldn't be bothered buying less than 1,000, even for testing, as I will use them eventually testing in another round if I didn't like them in the first test!
