Moving forward with this build, and reccomendations on a barrel for a 1917 action.

And second off where in heck would I get a 50 cal barrel in Canada, looking for a 24 inch barrel.

Any dealers on here that would have one.

Second is it possible to get a new stock for a 1917 action...

Regards

My brother has both a 505 Gibbs and a 510 Wells on Enfield actions.
He made his own stocks for them, but I don't know what he used for barrels.
Since he doesn't have a computer I will ask him.
He built a really nice 404 Jeffery for me on a P14...it wears a Bevan King barrel and is an awesome shooter .

Bevan King built my barrel from scratch, but I have been told that he has retired. There are other barrel makers around. Don't forget you are going to have to work on the action and feeding as well.

Yep! Cant import 50 barrels, and the enfield 1917 threads are a Beeotch, plus have no Idea how or where to find a stock!

It would be easier to buy a CZ 550 lol!

No just thought i would ask some questions, and start getting some ideas together, Looks like I found an action.

Montana is finally producing their 505 sized action ($850.00 USD)....A far easier and less expensive place to start IMHO.

Good luck with the build!

Hope you enjoy pain. That sucker is gonna tenderize your shoulder ;)

Actually they are not that bad. I had no trouble shooting mine. Off course I knew it when I shot off 140 grains of INR 7828!!:D

Oh I also have a M1917 in 300 mag and I got a stock from western gun parts.
Here it is.

Find some brass or ammo first.
Shooter's Choice, in Waterloo, lists formed Bertram .505 Gibbs brass at $136.95 per 20. Norma loads ammo. Runs $249.99US per 10, Stateside. Kynoch loads it too. $91.99US per 5.
A barrel made for the .50 BMG will be too big. The .50 BMG uses a .510" bullet. The .505 Gibbs uses, well, .505" bullets. They run $80 to $90 USD per 25. Barnes will sell you 20 for $30US. If you can find 'em in Canada. Dies and the shell holder will be a special order too. Likely won't fit into a regular press. It's 3.85" long loaded. Buffalo Arms has dies and they definitely won't go in a regular press. Different thread.
All the ammo prices come from Midway's site.
There's a guy, Stateside, making a semi-auto rifle in .505 Gibbs. Cost you 10 grand US.

You would be better off with something like a .500 A-Square. Brass is soooo much easier to get (.460 based). And alot more punch too!

Good advice 444.

The 500 A-Square will push a 600 grain bullet at 2600+fps and the 700s to 2400+fps....You have to ask yourself how much more you might need from a 50cal bullet?

Got pictures of your Gibbs 505Gibbs?
I've never heard anyone describe the 505's recoil as not bad!
Who built your rifle?

I will look for some photos.
The rifle was built by Bevan King who did all the barrel work, rebuilt the action and smoothed out the frrding. Bills Guns in Burns Lake did all the stock work and I was very happy with the work dione by both and recommend them. Weight was 12 pounds and I had a peep sight installed.
I found that recoil was stout but not as bad as a lighter and faster rifle. At least that is what I found. A friend who pulled the trigger, once, realised after that he had to keep his mouth closed when he did so!:D
