505 Gibbs Build!

Here you are

I will look for some photos.
The rifle was built by Bevan King who did all the barrel work, rebuilt the action and smoothed out the frrding. Bills Guns in Burns Lake did all the stock work and I was very happy with the work dione by both and recommend them. Weight was 12 pounds and I had a peep sight installed.
I found that recoil was stout but not as bad as a lighter and faster rifle. At least that is what I found. A friend who pulled the trigger, once, realised after that he had to keep his mouth closed when he did so!:D

Is it 505 or 510 bore?

The Gibbs should properly be a .505 bore. That being said, lots get built as .510s due to the availability of barrels. Phil Shoemaker (of Rifle magazine) built one on a Brevex Mauser and a surplus M2 barrel. So far he hasn't been clawed up while carrying it, that I've heard of. Overkill for sheep, but will keep you safe from the toothed beasties.

I've got a King blank in the basement for just such a project and, if he's ceased production, I'm so much the better for it. I've thought about buying a CZ action from Brownells to build a Gibbs, but haven't pulled the trigger on it yet.

The .510 bore has better (longer/heavier) available bullets.

The 525 is an OK size, but with all that capacity I would vote for 600-700 grain bullets....I am unaware of any .505 bullets that heavy.

The 585 or 600 OKH are another good choice for those looking for monster power out of the 505 case.

Moving forward with this build, and reccomendations on a barrel for a 1917 action.

And second off where in heck would I get a 50 cal barrel in Canada, looking for a 24 inch barrel.

Any dealers on here that would have one.

Second is it possible to get a new stock for a 1917 action...

Regards

MPI makes very nice fiberglass stock for them and I still have one for my 300WM P-14 and still like it very much:

Check Pac-Nor for barrels, they will ship to Canada, and are reasonable in prices. Also, you can got to Richards Microfit Gunstocks (www.rifle-stocks.com) for a new stock for the p17/p14. They can do all sorts of different options, and they will ship north as well. Good luck, I enjoy pain, too!

hahahaha, that did make me laugh. I'm sure there is plans to neck the Ruger up to .458 and hey, why not .505. Might be fun.

I suspect that might exceed the Ruger's case limitations but at the very least it would be lacking in powder capacity being significantly shorter than a .500 NE, which is also a straight wall round. It all depends what level of performance you are willing to accept, but any .50 caliber rifle will be an attention getter.

There is surely not enough capacity of that case to be a contender in any of the big bore comparisons. I was mostly being a smart@$$ in reaction to Calum's funny jab.
