Hey guys,

having some major issues trying to reload for the 50AE. I cant get past the f**king de/re priming/sizing station. First set of dies i got were RCBS, non carbide dies. My fault, i forgot to lube first...:redface:
All my other sets are all carbide. So you guessed it, i got a case stuck. Big time. had a bugger of a time getting it out. (Thanks riderrick). :p

However it scratched the sides of the cases, so i ordered new dies, this time Lee. Also steel, as i cant find anything but. :rolleyes:

Got my press all set up again, but now even with TONS of lube it will not go in and out without getting stuck. I tried 3 cases, and all 3 got stuck. :rolleyes:


WTF am i doing wrong? I would really hate to have to buy yet another set. Oh and i also broke the decapping pin on the Lee dies. :runaway:

JD, did you inspect the die body? I had this issue with a guy's 270 Lyman dies the other day. When we pulled them apart the die was really rough in side (lots of ring machining marks). It needed a lot of lube to get them to size without ripping the handle off the press. Also, the seating die was cut WAY short; it had to be only 1/4 screwed into the press to keep it from crimping and crushing the brass.

Check how smooth the die body is.
 
When compared to the RCBS die, yes it is rougher. I do see the ring marks from machining. (Lee die) The RCBS has scratches from a die grinder? :p Ask Riderrick. So i did not want to weaken the brass any, especially with such a big caliber. But it is much smoother looking.
 
Are you using the nicheal cassing that are giving you the trouble or is it the old samson brass cassing?
I found warming them up before reszing the nicheal worked much easier and also CARBITE BITS & LUBE IS A MUST.
 
I don't think my RCBS die is carbide. I only load brass cases. Starline or Samson. I clean my brass till its shiny, lube the hell out of it and then resize. Make sure you are using the right shellplate, if not you'll leave cases in the die regularly.

Yeah it is the right shellplate, dillon 550, says 50 on it. Maybe a defect one? I thought so too, but it is the right shellplate. Thisis what is happening though, it is tearing the base from the bottom of the brass.

I'm not familiar with that particular brass. Is it straight walled pistol ??

If so, I'd try backing off the sizing die just enough so the problem stops then see if a dummy round made from it will properly chamber. Maybe you're getting jambed up on an extra thick webbing and don't need to resize 100% full length ??

I've run across some brands of brass (S&B comes to mind) that has flash holes small enough to trap decapping pins. I doubt this is the root of the problem but the situation, if it exists, certainly wouldn't help. This might be worth checking.

Sorry if I'm in left field with this. I'm thinking 45 ACP only bigger :redface:.

Think 44 magnum length, but twice as fat. :eek:

I have also yet to make a proper round that will chamber. The last ones i did were not resized, but would not chamber in the gun. I thought the brass was virgin, but it all got mixed together with once fired, and tumbled, so i am not sure what is what now.
 
It might be your press does not have enough leverage...

I am looking into this RCBS Carbide 3-Die Set with Taper Crimp 50 Action Express but I cant find any info when I did a quick search... ahh I did just find them $400 USD and they dont work in standard presses they are 1 1/4".

I use a Dillon 550 and RCBS steel dies on IMI 50AE brass along with Lyman spray lube and haven't stuck anything yet.

The RCBS sizing die is shiny and smooth on the inside, there are no notable machining marks (you can see the reflection of the knurl on the decapping pin easily).

I will try the lube, i didnt have time today. I have some RCBS spray lube i will try tomorrow, i will also try to re-size a brass with both sets to see if either work with the other lube.

Yep but you have to look at what your getting they are built off the 50BMG size die to allow for the proper thickness carbide insert so its strong and wont break. They also take about 90 days to get as each set is custom made its a last resort if you cant get yours working.

Might want to try some different lubes... paste lube applied with the fingers is normally what I have used in the past for rifles... all my pistol reloading has been done with carbide... I want to get a 50AE eventually too :)
Too much lube can be bad thing too a nice thin film works best.
 
Ok good news. The Lee dies are JUNK! It is the lee dies that are giving me grief. I need to order a new RCBS sizing/decapping die though. It works no problem with the lube, but has scratches in it from the die grinder.

Glad i figured it out though, was really pissing me off. Thanks for help guys!
 
Did I read you were not using sizing lube, but oil?

Try some lanolin if you are stuck for lube. Even ivory soap works well (what the ammo plants use)
 
There should be no marks inside the resizing die at all. If there are, send it back to RCBS they will fix it for free. Send it without the decapping rod and they'll replace that too.
I use Hornady one shot for all my resizing. Its the best case lube I can find, IMO.

The only reason there are marks in the RCBS die is from riderrick and his die grinder. :D Not sure if they will still warranty it? :eek:

The die with the machining marks are the Lee dies. I will never buy anything Lee again. Oops.
