50BMG with iron sites ...

Using some practical thought here, but do you really want to use a so chambered rifle at closer distances that often accompany the use of irons, that it could very easily over penetrate your intended target and careen off into the neighboring countryside?

That would be my own greatest concern.

On occasion I shoot mine for $#!ts and giggles at the range which is only 100m, goes straight through half in steel and yes, over penetrates right into the side of a mountain.

Hey, I'm right with you buddy! lol

I guess I should have stated previously, that I would worry about the backdrop while game hunting with this chambering.

Cheers.....

Only problem is that the .50BMG and the 500S&W are not even remotely comparable. The BMG has more energy at 2km then the S&W does at the muzzle.

Someone would be able to hit anything smaller than a building at 2km with iron sites? Not to derail the intent of 50 BMG and irons. .....but i could think of a few that allow big bore performance to the functional limit of iron sites.

Off the top of my head....lots of 45-70...including the Baikal 45-70 SXS, the little Handi in 500 S&W or 460 S & W. Then there are the "cheaper" african doubles. Side tracked by the break action comment. The whole thing is how much do you want to spend to use a very powerful caliber, with irons. It is the irons thing that limits the usefulness. Finding a projectile that worked well at close range....based on the OP's location/irons...for hunting. Too withstand the 50 BMG most projectiles would pass through a animal without expanding, or in the case of a VLD...Amax...potentially blow up on contact at close range.

Neat project, i am just not sure what the OP wants...or expects to accomplish. Someone else can chime in, i am just thinking that there is probably a existing firearm. Not inventing a new mouse trap.

How about 1" Nordenfeldt, double barrel falling block. Ugh. Scratch that - it would be a heavy beast.

Here is an: Elswick Aiming Rifle sub-calibre device for British 6 Inch QF Naval Guns

All you have to do is get one, remove the big bits, and make up a stock & trigger controlled firing mechanism for her.

Imagine the enraged milsurp collectors!

This beast fired 1" aiming tube, which was identical to 1" Nordenfeldt except the aiming tube projectiles were cast lead.

It would be a bit more practical :)p) than a .50 bmg as the Nordenfeldt was expressly made for short range use against those rascally torpedo boats.

to go along with this when will someone make the "semi auto with the pistol variant for 10 round magazine 50bmg" comment?

oh crud...

I think it would be useless
anyway, a short barrel will not give you the case's potential

but if what you want is a real short not too heavy big bagner, have a look at the 700 nitro express

Its messed up when you have to admit .50BMG is FAR CHEAPER to buy and far easier to locate, then 700 Nitro.

I wouldn't say no. The M2 has irons and fires fully automatic. So they do have a use.

I wouldn't be getting to close to them though.. Ouch

Hmmmmm we just built a 24" barreled .50 with iron sights recently for someone to hunt some interesting game with, coo coo ca choo.

Whats the price range on a project like that? Really honestly curious.

Single shot? Repeater?

My curiosity is just racing now.

That'd be an M2 Browning HMG. Comes with multiple variations of iron sights. 28"is the minimum barrel length according to Dan Lilja. Who just knows. Add the W's. .riflebarrels.com/articles/50calibre/lengths_velocity_50_bmg.htm
A 12 gauge coach gun is bigger in calibre than a .50 BMG. It's about .75 calibre. Costs less and is easier to shoot too. snicker.
