How fast can these be pushed before they start to come apart? I'm using a 223 with a 1 in 9 twist. Shot some today @ 25yrds and only about 1/2 hit paper. Had them loaded on top of 25.5grs of WC735.
 
According to a small write up in the hornady 8th edition manual 3500 ft/s is about max velocity for this bullet.faster than that and the bullet stands a high % chance of coming apart in flight.
 
One of the manuals cautioned about using them in a 1-10 Mini-14 twist so faster would be worse.Harold............it's not the bullet weight that's the problem it's the construction.

I just had the same thing happen to me. I found some SPSX that I had loaded over 26.0gr of benchmark that I made up for a Browning composite stalker that I used to own. They were very accurate in the browning, not so much in the Savage 12 I'm shooting now. But it took me a few rounds to catch on.:p The first bullet actually made it to the paper, and low and behold the next 4 went through the same hole!(watching through the scope);) I was ecstatic! I moved to a new aiming point and round #6 seemed to miss the paper altogether! It then dawned on me what was going on. To prove it I aimed at the 300m berm and lifted my head to watch as I pulled the trigger. Sure enough, a 100yard long puff of grey smoke......:D The good news is I DO eventually catch on.:p
 
I had the same problem recently. I loaded up some 55 grain Hornady SX with a max load of W748. Shot through my Savage Model 11 with a 1 in 9 twist, two of the first five rounds never made it to the target.
I used to use those bullets in my .22-250 with a 1 in 14 twist at a higher velocity with no problems. Since I no longer have the .22-250, I guess these bullets will be used in lower velocity loads.
 
The thing is I usually shoot 40gr V-Max with a near full load of XBR8208 and haven't had any come apart. In fact they shoot real well out to 300 yrds. These SX must be really thin skinned. I thought that being heavier and going slower they would work. Guess I'll feed them to the .222.
 
Running some over 25.8gr H335 in my CZ 223 with 1/9 twist. MOA or better, depending on me. No problems with them coming apart mid-flight. I assume somewhere between 3300 and 3400 fps.
 
HI, I hate to hijack your thread but does the speed limit apply to the 55 grain SPSX as well, of course I just loaded a bunch in a 22-250. I guess time will tell.
