50th Anniversary Ruger 10/22 Contest Winner Model#11173
so i really enjoy my Ruger 10/22's.
i saw this 50th Anv model 11173 when it came out back in April and wanted to get my grubby fingers on one but i had a couple other things on the list ahead of it that had to get picked up. So like the good hunter i am i patiently sat and waited and waited and waited and FINALLY the time was right and i was able to pull the trigger on one!
now, i already have more then a couple 10/22's in the stable and my original plan was to pick this gun up and actually KEEP it unshot in the box and tuck it away at the back of one of the safes and keep it for 20-30 years and then pull it out.
but im weak..... im sooooo weak!
i got the gun in the mail today, i had to of course take it out of the box to make sure it was in there, right!?
once out of the box, well i should take it out of the plastic, just to make sure everything is good on it, would hate to have to call Ruger 30 years from now and try to get something replaced that was broke or missing.
so out of the plastic.
now that im looking at it i am NOT going to cut the plastic tie off the trigger.
that is staying on.
for sure.
no doubt about that, the plastic tie is staying on.
but...... it a hour until sundown and the range is only 5 minutes away.
*temptation creeps in*
really though, what kind of gun owner would i be if i wasnt 100% sure that all my guns where in perfect working order?
so lets fast forward to now.
back from the range (insert happy smile here) and i have to say i am really impressed with this gun!
i picked up a base model one last year (2013) to compare it to my 80's and 90's ones and this 2014 one is wayyyyyyy better then last years offering.
i think its all the perks of this one.
the Ruger American Rimfire stock that its on for one.
i have the above mentioned gun and im not usually one for composite stocks but i really like these ones!
just the right amount of ruff texture and solid plastic (is that even possible?) that it feels really nice in the hands.
and the stock sites are WAY WAY WAY better then the normal stock ruger sites.
what do they call them? Rear Ghost ring and a front 3 blade post and they have a metal pic rail built into that as well.
now, call me pessimistic but i was just assuming that rail was gonna be plastic (high density tactical plastic - plastic non the less) but low and behold its metal!
what else, oh, it has a flash hider, woohoo, while im not all about hiding my flash i do like putting lipstick on my pigs so i can get behind this flash hider.
stainless steel or what does ruger call it, brushed satin or something?
regardless really nice like always.
has a what i would call medium length mag release which is nice. not that push in one that they use to come with. but its (wait for it) plastic.
oh, and something that is really nice, the take down screw is actually a hex head, they actually DO read online chatter and they have (after 50 years) realized how much those bloody flat head take down screws where getting hated on.
thats a nice change, i have a bin full of those i got off Dlask couple years ago just so i can replace every flat head one i come across, its my life goal, i walk the world like Kane changing out 10/22 take down screws.
only bad thing i found on the gun;
on the inside of the receiver the 'brushed satin stainless steel' is almost like a parkarized finish.
its like braille, lets not dicker over words here its like curling ice, its pebbled!
i am contemplating dumping some compound on there and taking a couple hundred rounds out to the range and letting the bolt shine it up for me but its winter and i have a dremel and a lot of time on my hands so ill take it down and polish the bolt and the inside of the receiver with some wet 2000 and aluminum polish.
the old 10/22's had paint overshot and these ones have pebbling.
i took a pic after i had pulled back the bold twice and you can actually see the polish mark those 2 cycles did in the ruffness.
ill go upload the pic and put it up here for ya all to see.
all in all, in conclusion, in closing.
I LIKE THE GUN!
its light, 5lbs WITH RED DOT ON!
my 7yr old even says its light.
trigger pull is 5.5lbs but i haven't done anything to it and its the new plastic ones so it was expected to be blah (that's the technical term for that, look it up)
so what i will say to people if your looking to pick up a 10/22 - if you can spare the extra $100 this gun is well worth it.
