50th Anniversary Ruger 10/22 Contest Winner Model#11173

so i really enjoy my Ruger 10/22's.
i saw this 50th Anv model 11173 when it came out back in April and wanted to get my grubby fingers on one but i had a couple other things on the list ahead of it that had to get picked up. So like the good hunter i am i patiently sat and waited and waited and waited and FINALLY the time was right and i was able to pull the trigger on one!

now, i already have more then a couple 10/22's in the stable and my original plan was to pick this gun up and actually KEEP it unshot in the box and tuck it away at the back of one of the safes and keep it for 20-30 years and then pull it out.
but im weak..... im sooooo weak!
i got the gun in the mail today, i had to of course take it out of the box to make sure it was in there, right!?
once out of the box, well i should take it out of the plastic, just to make sure everything is good on it, would hate to have to call Ruger 30 years from now and try to get something replaced that was broke or missing.
so out of the plastic.
now that im looking at it i am NOT going to cut the plastic tie off the trigger.
that is staying on.
for sure.
no doubt about that, the plastic tie is staying on.

but...... it a hour until sundown and the range is only 5 minutes away.
*temptation creeps in*
really though, what kind of gun owner would i be if i wasnt 100% sure that all my guns where in perfect working order?

so lets fast forward to now.
back from the range (insert happy smile here) and i have to say i am really impressed with this gun!
i picked up a base model one last year (2013) to compare it to my 80's and 90's ones and this 2014 one is wayyyyyyy better then last years offering.
i think its all the perks of this one.
the Ruger American Rimfire stock that its on for one.
i have the above mentioned gun and im not usually one for composite stocks but i really like these ones!
just the right amount of ruff texture and solid plastic (is that even possible?) that it feels really nice in the hands.
and the stock sites are WAY WAY WAY better then the normal stock ruger sites.
what do they call them? Rear Ghost ring and a front 3 blade post and they have a metal pic rail built into that as well.
now, call me pessimistic but i was just assuming that rail was gonna be plastic (high density tactical plastic - plastic non the less) but low and behold its metal!
what else, oh, it has a flash hider, woohoo, while im not all about hiding my flash i do like putting lipstick on my pigs so i can get behind this flash hider.
stainless steel or what does ruger call it, brushed satin or something?
regardless really nice like always.

has a what i would call medium length mag release which is nice. not that push in one that they use to come with. but its (wait for it) plastic.
oh, and something that is really nice, the take down screw is actually a hex head, they actually DO read online chatter and they have (after 50 years) realized how much those bloody flat head take down screws where getting hated on.
thats a nice change, i have a bin full of those i got off Dlask couple years ago just so i can replace every flat head one i come across, its my life goal, i walk the world like Kane changing out 10/22 take down screws.

only bad thing i found on the gun;
on the inside of the receiver the 'brushed satin stainless steel' is almost like a parkarized finish.
its like braille, lets not dicker over words here its like curling ice, its pebbled!
i am contemplating dumping some compound on there and taking a couple hundred rounds out to the range and letting the bolt shine it up for me but its winter and i have a dremel and a lot of time on my hands so ill take it down and polish the bolt and the inside of the receiver with some wet 2000 and aluminum polish.
the old 10/22's had paint overshot and these ones have pebbling.
i took a pic after i had pulled back the bold twice and you can actually see the polish mark those 2 cycles did in the ruffness.
ill go upload the pic and put it up here for ya all to see.

all in all, in conclusion, in closing.
I LIKE THE GUN!

its light, 5lbs WITH RED DOT ON!
my 7yr old even says its light.
trigger pull is 5.5lbs but i haven't done anything to it and its the new plastic ones so it was expected to be blah (that's the technical term for that, look it up)

so what i will say to people if your looking to pick up a 10/22 - if you can spare the extra $100 this gun is well worth it.

if you look at that inside pic even on the side you can see how ruff the finish is.
which is surprising considering that outside is soooooo polished.
it took me a lot of pictures to finally get ones that didn't have glare on them from the polished outside finish.
shame they couldn't have done that to the inside.

She sure is pretty, thanks for the writeup! I always enjoy your posts on the 10/22s. I had to clean up the overspray on my 10/22 from a couple years ago as well. Now I just need this to come in a takedown version (to get the upgraded sights & stock) and I'll probably cave. Still enjoying my DSP with techsights, just wish it came apart so it'd be easier to clean / hold a zero on the sights.

the red dot is a Chinese knock off of the Bushnell TRS-25.
im not a red dot guy but i picked up a couple to put on angle holders for back up on my ARs and didnt like it, so i had them laying around, chucked one on here until i can pick up some optics for it.

have you looked at the new tactical take down?
they have it in the bright stainless too with the flash hider, also in camo with the flash hider.
just cant put that new ghost site combo on it because it would cover where the front and back come together.

errrrr, maybe i shouldn't have told you about that.....

Ha ha, no I knew about those. I like the 50th anniversary/ruger American style stock and the factory peeps. I see now where the front and back would go together and maybe it's just a dream but I'm in no rush. Still enjoying my Henry frontier and 10/22 with irons just fine. Thanks though.

Good write up and good humour. Nice way to start my day. Now I have 3 10/22s that I have not shot to date. No reason just not got around to it. But that will happen soon. Ya got me motivated.

Try to sight it in with the open sights and let me know how ya do, I'm on my second one (and its not real good either) and looked at 4 of them, barrels are leanin' to the left a bit like 15 moa.

hmmm, i just did some blasting with it so i wasnt doing any tack pushing.
when i go onto days off here in a couple days ill take it back out and take the red dot off and get more intimate with it and see if any problems come up.

had it out at the range today, put 200 rounds down the pipe to season it up and break it in a little.
no problems with the stock sites and really impressed with the cheap knock off red dot i put on there!

i didnt clean up the action yet, i wanted to wait till i put all the break in rounds down it so when i rip it apart tonight i can see where im getting the rubbing at.
so tonight will be break down night and a nice gentle rub down with G96 after i polish up the inside of the receiver and switch out the bolt buffer with a Kidd one.

ill say it again, very impressed with this gun.
im thinking i may send this ones trigger group down to Brimstone Gunsmiths to have the tier 1 job done to it in stead of VQ or swapping out the trigger group.

so at supper tonight my wife declared that after supper it was time to start setting up Christmas decorations.
so i then decided that tonight was going to be the perfect time to take apart this new gun and do some work!

so off to the shop i went with a Metallica and a Nirvana CD in one hand and the new 10/22 in the other, a smile on my face and a spring in my step and probably a very mad wife with a very evil glare behind me.

lets recap this gun so far.
so far i havnt ripped this gun down and im very happy with it.
now that i have ripped it down im not so happy.
the tool marks on the inside parts was nasty..... NASTY!

the bolt had massive tool marks in it that i couldnt even take out with an hour of sanding and polishing.
i was very disheartened.
but in the end the gun ran good so i guess its more of a cosmetic thing.

anyways i took the gun down and went over every part.
the bolt and the inside of the receiver where gonna need a lot of smoothing.

i had opened up my extra parts bin for 10/22 and found i had a nice stainless trigger in there, a Kidd buffer bolt and a TacSol extended mag release and also a Dlask charging handle (with a scull on it) and decided what the heck, id put them all on as well.

for the bolt and receiver i started with a quick hit from 600grit wet paper using oil instead of water, then on to 1500 wet again with oil, then out came the dremel with the felt pad to give it a little buff when done.

the bolt i could not get the deep machine marks out of it as they where way to deep. the receiver on the other hand cleaned up super nice!

here's some pic's;

the right side of this bolt pad is polished the left side is not so you can see the difference

here are the bottom bolt pads this one the left one is done and the right one not yet

these 2 pics are the underside of the bolt - try not to projectile vomit when you see all the tool marks!

here are 2 of the inside of the receiver with the trigger group and bolt and charging handle out - you can see how ruff the finish is

now for comparison, here is the inside of the receiver after a quick polish.
039_zpsac59217d.jpg

underside of the bolt cleaned up as best i could, i didnt dare try to remove the deep tool marks as that would have required me taking off a good 1/8"

far side of the bolt (that rubs against the inside of the receiver)

and some toys added
Kidd Buffer Bolt - if your not using one of these you dont know what your missing!

stainless trigger (metal) replaced the plastic black one and a TacSol extended mag release

Dlask extended charging handle (with skull)

i also colored the front site post white (painted) - just the middle one of the three for easier seeing.

and the finished product.
the gun cycles soooooooooooooooo much better its not even funny.

now, i dont know if anyone saw the review i did of the Ruger Rimfire back in Feb but i had a problem with the new plastic stock letting in any mag other then the stock 10rd mag.

i was surprised to find that THIS stock which is the same stock still has the same problem (well not really surprised)

here you can see how tight the sides of the magwell are onto the stock mag
060_zps0e38e892.jpg

and here you can see all the scratches and divets ive put into the side of the magwell already and ive only put the mag in maybe 10 times?
063_zpsbaffcaf3.jpg

im not too worried about this though, on my Bolt action one it loosed up the more i used it as the mags chewed away at the plastic until the mags fit fine.
just be advised if you try to put a steel lip BC mag in here they wont even go in.
your gonna need to sand some product off the side.

Nice work cleaning that up a bit! You seem pretty handy with these. If your bored this winter I may have a small project if your interested.

WMU 357?
your gonna have to drive 4-5 hours north to bring me any projects.
and buy the coffee.
and when i say coffee i mean beer.
and when i say beer i mean scotch.
