Did all 51 Colts come out with a bead front sight? I've seen pics of some high-end guns (not this old gal) that have this blade sight. Or are they all old replacements when the bead wore off?
This one is nice on the inside. All matching, good bore and chambers. Just well used on the outside. Maybe a good shooter.

A blade sight on an 1851 Navy Colt is a replacement...basically an antique bubba gun...no offense intended.
The original sight was not a bead as you find on shotguns...it was a cone shaped affair which was screwed into the barrel.
Cheers

There are examples of 1851 Navy's with silver coins used as a replacement for the front sights.
Here is another example from Collectors Firearms web site, this is a $10,500 gun so if it is a replacement it didn't hurt the value much:

The '51 Navy was produced with 3 types of sights...
1-Pin or post
2- Dovetail
3- Blade type
While the pin type was most common, the blade and dovetail types could have been requested by individuals orders.

colt sight

hello bill-mine has what looks like a bead on a small square base inset flush with the barrel. mine is prettier than yours 'cause some dummy polished her years ago. fortunately did not polish of the script off the barrel but most of the cyl scene is gone. at least all the numbers match. cheers
