510 lb Wild Pig

My buddy knocked over this little fella with a H&R Handi-rifle in 17HMR but it was not much bigger than a baby and the bullet completely disintegrated.

It was still an awesome shot, quartering away 60yds on the run. However I cannot even come at how you managed to drop that monster with a 17HMR. You put about 6 shots into it, right? Which rifle were you using? A semi-auto or pump or lever?

Its a Marlin bolt action 7 shot clip. I was using FMJ 20 grain CCI's. You can actually see the gun on the rack of my ATV in the one picture.

I almost forgot the range was about 35 yards.

Ahhh, the FMJs would've held up much better and 35yds it a good distance. People boast about long shots but I prefer dead shots and the closer you are the bigger the target! My buddy was using Hornady V-Max ammo and the core and jacket separated in a dramatic fashion. Still, if they hadn't we wouldn't have found the insides all smashed up. It dropped that little pig on the spot. How hard did the boar go down - fast or did he run a bit?

It was all dazed after the first shot and went about 50 yards and rolled over. I gave it a few extra shots in the head before I risked walking up as it was bigger then both me and my ATV put together lol

Wow, only 50yds, excellent shooting! A few extra headshots is always a great idea on pig that big. There was a story of a young bloke who went out pig hunting near Byrock, 60 miles east of Bourke, in western NSW, here in the Australian outback. The fellas at the local pub knew he was going and asked him if he'd be ok. "Sure," he replied "I've got my best dog with me and I'll take my 22-250 just in case." At 2am the publican was having a last night cap with a couple of locals when the phone rang. It was the young fella. "I've got a 450lb boar here. He's down, the dog's holding him and so am I but the dog doesn't look well at all. I've shot him with the '250 but he's so encrusted with mud and crap it isn't doing the job. Instead he's just pissed off and I don't dare let go enough to stick him. Can I get some help?" They worked out where he was and when they got out there it took 3 of them to drag it into the ute (pickup). The head's been mounted and hangs over the bar at Byrock pub and it's massive. It isn't as pretty as yours either. Black and a mouth full of ivory. :(

one of the photos i posted up was of a sow my mate dropped with his 300win mag.
he shot it at 25yards,she rolled over and ran off.
found her dead 80 yards away.
the round did not exit her, just mushroomed against her ribs.

these beasts are big, powerful and can out run you.
treat them with the utmost respect.

while out hunting boars by me i nearly sh*t my pants twice
be careful
