Hi everyone,

I've been lurking around here for a while. I'm going to be getting my PAL next week any my hunting license in ~2wks from that. I don't currently own any firearms, but my 1st couple purchases will probably be a rem 870 express and one of those cheap savage combos, probably low caliber.

One thing I've noticed is that while I share the passion that most of you do for firearms, I'm on the other side of the political spectrum from most of you. I'm quite the dirty socialist (in practice, not theory) and do believe that the government should absolutely be in the business of firearms oversight. Of course, not in the ass-backwards way that is currently implemented, but a more comprehensive firearms act that would allow shooters to do their thing while still affording the public the safety given by not having anybody running around with a fully auto AK in their trunk.

I also disagree with the premise that arming the populace will somehow make the general public safer. That idea is not so rampant here as it is on the American gun sites like TheHighRoad and DefensiveCarry etc, but I still see it from many of the sigs from the frequent posters.

I'll probably also be getting my RPAL upgrade in a month or so, but I have decided to take it slow and do the rifles first, both to not break the bank and so that my friends and family don't think I've gone off the deep end and started my own little armory in my basement (I'm also a pacifist in many ways, so this move will surprise many of my close acquaintances).

Not trying to stir the pot or get under anybody's skin but just so everybody knows where I stand. I'll have quite a few questions for you all in the coming time (and yes, I'll search them first :) ) and judging from what I've seen, you guys are awesomely helpful.

Glad to be joining.

Hello and welcome. I happen to be one who agrees with what you've written here. Any government has the ability to regulate the activities, goods and services of its citizens. If that regulation proves unnecessary or nasty, that's why we have elections and a free press. It's up to the citizens to see that these things work properly, and I haven't seen any groundswell in either Canada or the US, to make existing gun laws any looser. I wish they were, but that's not something that prevented me from moving here (born in Toronto to US parents). I'm sure many here, as well as I, will be happy to help out. I don't know much about long guns, but I collect certain kinds of handguns.

Welcome Kalil. We dont care what your political leanings are as long as it's Conservative.
If we all voted Liberal we wouldn't have our guns for long. Enjoy the forums there is a wealth of info here.

Well, that's one thing that they certainly are into: firearms oversight.

In theory, it's hard to disagree with your premise. If there were some way to ensure public safety while still allowing us the freedom to make our own choices, I don't think many would disagree.

We have asked our elected officials to keep us safe and, as such, public safety is typically a part of their campaign promises and party policies. The problem, however, is that most politicians either don't want to or just can't keep the public safe. It's too difficult and it would require a certain level of honesty that they know would cost them their job at election time. Instead, they look for the feel-good solutions that make nice photo-ops because they're quicker and easier than actually tacking the problem.

Unfortunately, for those of us that frequent this forum, we're often the target of these feel-good "solutions". We've been around long enough to see what trusting the government to protect us looks like and we're not about to willingly go further down that path. Have a look at news reports and first hand reports from the UK if you want more info on that.

Welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy your stay.
