Took the pups and my 243Vls out for a run today, dogs spotted a muly doe and were off like s turd of hurdles,(can't seem to figure out a way to stop them from that) anyway they came back 20 minutes later, I'm sure the doe was not happy. Back to my 243, 525 yds for the first time, set up my gong and did a dope of 9 moa, shot off a stump standing and made 5 out of 5 hits, using 95gr Hornady sst's....look out Wolves here I come.
Cheers:sniper:

Try an electronic shock collar. A public forum isn't a great place to tell folks that your dogs chase deer! Domestic dogs chasing wildlife here is serious buisness. Owners can be charged and it's also cause to shoot on sight!

I see that. ;) Personally, I love dogs.....What I don't like, is dogs running at large...and especially chasing big game animals. If the dogs decided to attack a child...would he wonder about how to stop that too?....Pets are their owners responsibility...period!

Case in point. I'm sure he was referring to "Kevin G" s comment.

Not sure who Kevin G is but thanks for the kind words, yes my pups are out of hand but it doesn't seem to mater where I take them out for a run, there is always deer around , I'm doomed to say anything on this board that won't offend some one, but being I have 60 years of experience who gives a Farmer.
Cheers:sniper:
LOL my dogs are not child chasers and if they were then so would I.

Tack...I'm a father of 3, grand father of 4 and am 51yrs old. I too have a few miles under my belt, BUTTT...sorry, but I feel pretty adament on this one. I hate seeing or reading about pets doing that kind of stuff. It irks me cause it is avoidable!! I've seen deer bought down on ice by neighborhood pets....hamstrung and left to die a slow and painfull death....I've seen and read about kids having their faces bitten because of an "OFF LEASH" family pet" with no history of aggressiveness ever!!!

Honestly...If they're gone chasing something....out of your sight for 20 minutes..you REALLY don't know WHAT they're doing or chasing do you?? There's ..lots of hazards on both ends for game, kids AND pets...what about someone out after a yote...sees a blur...BANG..your dog dead...what about trappers or lines around Invermere...I guessing yes..perhaps they're chasing an animal that darts across a road and forcing some innocent car driver into the ditch...or worse!!
..like all I'm saying is as a pet owner...be more responsible. There are ways to control your dogs...it's called training and waterfowl and upland guys have been doing it for years ...quite successfully too!!
I can't agree with you on letting them running at large and just having fun esp in wildlife habitat!! To me, Your post reads like you really don't care about your dogs, their behaviour, what your dogs are doing and what happens to them. Then, IMHO, you don't deserve any dogs. They DO deserve better tho.

Kevin I don;t know what to say about this, your right, I'm wrong, its a never ending training session for dogs and yes I am their trainer. There only pups at 1and 1/2 and I know they will live to be old dogs like all the others I have had in the past, a shock collar will never happen on one of my pets to me that is cruel so I guess its down to some rope training.
Cheers

A 50 ft piece of light rope works wonders, and they will be responding to your commands fairly quickly.

Having said that, a very good friend of mine tried a shock collar on two of his dogs. It was amazing! One dog took just two jolts, the other three, before they were broken of running off, and refusing to stop. That was three years ago, and to this day, they still halt immediately when called.

:agree: Does wonders for unruly children too :stirthepot2:

Shock collars work. It amazes me at how easily dog owners forget that dogs are animals. I'm not saying feed spike 10K volts, but for Christ sake...it's jolt...

I don't understand this black and white feedback on this board in regards to off leash dogs. Especially given the nature of the members. I can understand how in communities a off leash dog can be problematic and how dogs have been involved in attacks but come on, the op is in an environment where he can target practice. A few dogs being dogs is the least of anyone's concern. Like most anything, theres a time and a place for everything and if someone says I can't let me dog off leash in the middle of phucking no where than I would have a few choice words with them.

i think the people were trying to help the op with his problem pertaining to his dogs not obeying him. i dont think they had a problem with his dogs being out in the bush loose. :)

I see. Coincidentally I just pick up a e-collar for my dog as well. Don't have a problem with him running @ large, only barking, humping other dogs and with general reinforcement of training. Works quite well.

I don't mean to make light of the situation;) but to add a touch of humour, a workmate and friend of mine had a similar experience with his English Pointer. On Blue Grouse, the dog was a rock solid pointer and an excellant retriever on downed birds but at the first sign of a Deer, paint him gone. My friend tried every trick in the book to break him of chasing Deer to little avail.

A Deer hunting partner of my friend said he was sure he could break the Deer chasing if he could have the dog for about a week. A week later he brought the dog back saying he was sure the problem was solved bit IF it should reoccur, he had one heavy sock inside a second and instructed my friend to sprinkle Deer scent on it and flail the dog with this.

On the first outing, all was going well. They had done well on a couple of coveys of 'Blues', then all went to hell in a hand basket when a Deer broke cover. After chasing the dog and screaming until he he looked like a stop sign, after about 1/2 an hour he finally located the tired dog. Following the instructions he had been given, he flailled the dog with the scented sock, getting out of breath and even redder in the face, then flung the sock into the bush. The dog promptly ran into the bush, retrieved the sock and returned it to his master.

Inline with a comment on an episode of Blue Collar TV, "And there's your sign". And,;)the dog never did stop chasing Deer.
