Just received my sks russian from weirmajack....HOLY SMOKES!!!!!:D:D:D.....
Fantastic... pics to follow later;)....Jacques sure knows how to pick them:D.
1st question: there is a 1 stamped on the face of the front sight....I thought I read at some point this is an indication from the factory that the rifle is in the top rating for accuracy{insert your own sks/acurate joke here:)}...can anyone conferm this?
2nd question: Rifle is all matching,however I can't find a serial# on the bayonet.Can anyone tell me if the # might be underneath the spring-loaded handle?
3rd question: I have done a quick field strip to clean it up a little{not much to clean,someone{Jacques?}removed all cosmo and oiled it:D}....Icouldn't get the barrel assembly away from the stock:confused:,it's my first laminate and I was wondering if the wrist bolt has to be removed to get the barrel out,or is it just tight, and a little more force needed to separate?

First off, welcome to club SKS. Secondly, good choice buying from weimajack. He has a great selection of quality SKS's and has excellent customer service!

There are a whole assortment of threads devoted to the debate/topic of front sight number stamp and accuracy. Do some searching. I think at this point, nobody really knows for sure. I tend to only buy SKS's with #1 on the front sight as a precaution. :)

I can't answer the question on serial numbers on the bayonet, as mine don't have any recognizable numbers either. I'm sure the experts will chime in.

Your stock is just tight fitting (which is a good thing), use a bit of force/persuasion and the barrel with separate from the stock.
 
Yep,thanks buddy,I'm still not sure about the front sight #1 thing and I haven't checked my chinese chicom for this mark yet{if they even used a similar system?}
Also is there any views on black bolts{CT Bellville stock} vs. silver bolt refurbs? Is one an indicator of a more involved refurb than the other?
 
Good choice of suppliers. Small stock,but high quality hand picks.

The numbers on the front sight indicates the journal size of the barrel.

Some bayonets are numbered at refurb.

Replacement laminates are quite often very tight.
 
Sorry about pic quality. But the izzy bolt that didn't turn out looks new,has matching #'s but has several stampings on it that I've never seen before.Also it's clear to me that the stock for this rifle was originally hardwood {see gas block} and a new never #'rd laminate stock was installed but it has 3 different stamps on it as well as serial #?

Almost twins, the chicom is very rugged,and so is the russian. The russian has a sort of refinement to it though that the chinese cousin doesn't :)

My buddies and I own and shoot almost 2 dozen SKS rifles of all breeds. Some time ago while all the boys were enjoying some pops, the debate started about whose SKS can shoot better than the next. Not all at once, but every single rifle was put in front of a target and we determined which shot best. Some time later... one of the guys has this theory that the front sight markings were to indicate the accuracy of a rifle. Since we still had the targets with the name of each rifle, we looked up each front sight markings and compared...


And guess what? the markings didn't mean diddley squat. The best shooter was a painted black bolt SKS with an unidentifiable mark and second best was a 53 Tula with a #3. The remainder of the numbers on the front sights showed no evidence of accuracy or dis-accuracy. The number 1 markings didn't shoot any better than any other number.

My guess is that the numbers were to indicate factory tolerances for fitting a front sight to a barrel of equal tolerances. Perhaps I'm wrong, but how many rifles do you have to shoot for the law of averages to show up?
 
Fiddler,This comment makes sense to me, If i were in the business of making guns and during quality control check some came up short in the acuracy dept. I wouldnt mark a stamp indicating "you won't be able to hit anything #". I would order it "to be repaired" or "NFG" and the rifle would never be released and smelted down again.
