Some time ago I obtained a 541T sporter 22 for a very attractive price, due to the fact that it reputedly did not shoot well.

I received it, mounted optics on it, and took a quick look through the barrel from the breech end...it was clean and looked shiny.

I did notice that it had been full-length bedded, and had the second screw installed. Trigger had been adjusted to about 2#

Took it out, and ran several good quality ammos through it at 50M Nothing shot under 1", and some were in excess of 1½"

Took it home and decided to clean it up well. First patch revealed the issue....a bulge in the barrel, about 1" back from the muzzle.

Cleaned it up well, and took a look with the bore scope....easy to see the section that was bulged.

Sent it out to my 'smith, had him lop 2" off the barrel and put a target crown on it. Now I tried it again. Voila!! it shoots like a 541T should!
in the .3's and .4's with anything I put through it of any quality. Some R50 made a couple of very nice bugholes with 5 shots at 50M.

Think I'll keep it. :) Regards, Dave.

Glad to hear you sorted it out! I picked up a 541T HB off here and it shoots great. I'm planning on adding the second screw and pillar bedding it. Right now the barrel lays in the channel on the right side, surprising it shoots like it does.

I don't always associate posts with posters, but can't help appreciate that this 541 is in hands that can truly use it. OP a 541 is a fine gem for anyone, but could truly be tested in your hands.

Posted before those envy inspiring target pictures, or images of the gem itself are shown.

Love my 541's but my groups are not as neat as yours :) . I sure would like Remington to step up and build a good mag for these guns. The original 5 rd. work OK but sure could use a reliable 10 in the gopher patch. Nice to see you brought 1 back to where it should be.
