54R rifles available in Canada?

mosin nagant

Svt 40

there is also a American made lever action made for Russian during WW2 but good like finding one then good luck affording one

That's all I know of

These fellows seem to forget about the most available rifle, the M91/30 at around $200 plus taxes and shipping. You can usually find a few at your local gun shop and some of the chain outlets, such as Canadian Tire. Then again, don't forget to check out the banner advertisers. Are you really inexperienced in how to find what you're looking for????

Hey Im with you, I love the Mosin, but there sure are alot of people looking to shoot Russian surplus out of something besides the usual. There arent enough chamberings in 7.62x54r or 7.62x39 imho which is why guys are willing to pay 6-700$ for a M85 which really should be 350$ gun.

Modern commercial gun makers really don't like rimmed centerfire cartridges - I'm sure if someone made a massive fuss, Ruger could easily do a run of No1's in x54, pretty much the same way they did one in 303.

Rimmed center fire ammo two big issues. Rim lock and fitting into magazine nicely. I don't care though, my three of my top 5 favorite calibers are 22lr, 12 gauge and 303 British

I think Zastava makes a x54 bolt action rifle, They sell their x39 rifles on Canada Ammo, so I can assume if enough people ask they mite be able to import some.

I actually asked an importer about the Zastava 54R rifles a while back. The response was "not likely." The reason being that they would cost so much more than Mosins, and in fact would likely cost more than a Remington 700 in 30-06.

There just wouldn't be enough economy of scale to bring the price to within reasonable levels.

I agree, it appears lots of gun folks can't figure out how that "rim thing" goes, sad really. I do think that a Ruger No1 would be pretty cool in x54r

To get some idea of how different a rifle like a Zastava (or most other modern bolt actions) would have to be to accommodate 7.62x54R, have a look at some pictures of a Rigby .303 Mauser or a Siamese Mauser. In particular, pay attention to the shape of the magazine box. They would have to go to all that trouble when they could just sell you a .30-06 for less.

Why doesn't anybody design new guns for 7.62x54R? For the same reason that nobody designs new guns for 8mm Lebel.

I do agree that a Ruger #1 in 7.62x54R would be neat. A rimmed cartridge is the best choice for a single shot.

Within the family of Mosins you could work on various styles. The Polish M44 is a sweet heart of a rifle with the kick of a mule. But aside from that 91/30's, M38/44's and the SVT 40 are all that is readily available. Like the Lee Enfield no one is producing 54r or .303 British rifles. It's like the ammo and the rifle are named for each other. You say you have a 303 and it is automatically presumed its an Enfield. So if you want variety then you need a 91/30, M38 or M44 and an SVT 40. Depending on your location check Crappy tire, gun shops or a gun smith for stock.

Here is the list of all rifles in this caliber.
There are new rifles designed and will be designed in the future as well for 7.62x54R, its just too good of a cartridge. And there is a lot of it in the world.
What is available here in Canada is totally different story.

i like the list. Its almost torture knowing that those options will not be coming our way, but i do get tired of the same old SKS posts on this forum.

I thought the VEPR was legal in Canada too, just ridiculously expensive and rare...?

I have an SVT and 91/30, but was just curious about what else i could find for my stache of surplus. I want a variety of rifles, but i want to keep with a stockpile of 4 or max 5 different calibers.

You need to add one of the Mosin carbines in to the cabinet... Either an M38 or M44... At close range, you don't have to hit them with the bullet, just the fireball belching out should cook most things.

The VEPR is PROHIB as far as I know. They certainly arnt rare, nor expensive. My dream firearm, A .308 24" Vepr in wooden Dragunov furniture can be had for like $1000USD down stateside.

Absolute torture that ill probably never own one :(

Unless the Russian sanctions are lifted we are unlikely to see any modern rifles in this caliber.
