55gr FMJ .223 for Coyotes?

I am NOT a fan of fmj's for hunting in Ontario even though they are legal to use. I hunt in areas where there are houses & farm critters in every direction & I can't afford to have any stray bullets causing issues. I reload so I have many bullet options. I prefer the Hornaday VMAX bullets for shooting coyotes. Any of the expanding bullets will do fine on coyotes. Fmj's tend to pencil through & rarely drop a dog on the spot unless you get lucky with a CNS hit. Good luck coyote hunting.

Hornady 55grain A-MAX 19.99 at Ganon's in Oshawa.Even on sale sometimes at Bass Pro for 18 and change.

Have tried the "top of the line" ballistic tips from Winchester, Remington, Hornady, and Federal as well as several brands of PSP's. I don't know why but the Federals outshoot them all by a significant margin. From a 4-6" group with the others at 100 yards down to 1.5" with the Federals. So without getting into reloading, I'll just stick with the Federals.

In times past(not that long ago) some folks used FMJ strictly for coyotes and other fur bearers, to do minimum damage to the pelt. Some bullet outfits made fmj bullets in alot of diff. cals. to satisfy the demand. The use of fmj bullets for pretend war, was unheard of and only used otherwise by the military. I do remember Hornady offering 80 gr. 6mm FMJ bullets for varmint hunters wanting to not damage the fur.

Pelt damage was part of the reason for my question, but it's outweighed by safety concerns if there's a significant difference in frangibility between the solid and expanding bullets.

40gr vmax. Fur friendly if you avoid front-side leg/shoulder bones. No exit hole. Lights out.

I've shot probably 300 coyotes with this bullet; about the only thing I would change is going down in caliber to .204 ruger or .17 remington...might be time for a new gun now that I think about it!

I use 60 gr hollow points or v max, and they can still run around a bit before they fall over. I would'nt even try to use fmj.
Also someone asked about removing the tips of fmj. It's hard to do consistently so accuracy suffers, and I've read there's a chance of the jacket coming off in the barrel as fmj has an exposed base. I saw bulk winchester hollow points at Canadian tire. I actually considered buying some for gophers just to save the time I spend loading. I'd sacrifice a little accuracy(2moa v 1 moa) for an expanding bullet any day.
