.577 Nitro

Very exciting project Casull!

Your initial loads are, according to my loading data, quite light, but that is only reasonable for an initial test. I think you could loose 10" of barrel without it being a problem, and I expect your velocity is around 2100 given the light bullet and long barrel.

Once you've worked out the bugs I'm sure you'll see a 750 gr bullet from a 24" -26" bullet at 2000 fps.

Boomer,
Those are standard factory ballistics. With the long barrel and modern action, I am sure we'll see 900 grainers at that speed and 750s much faster. We'll see what happens there. I could cut 8" off and make a Howdah pistol I guess. I don't think this barrel will ever get under about 28".

I don't expect it to be that bad offhand, but I won't be sitting at a bench with it and hot loads.
With the .50, I shoot 570s at 2335 and 650s at 2250 but only from a standing rest, not from a bench top, just no fun sitting down.
This .577 is almost twice the weight of the .50, so I don't expect it to be nearly as bad.

Boomer,
Right now I see it as an interesting project. I'm sure it could go into the field especially carried in by an ATV or boat. I don't see carrying it any distance. If it gets hunted really depends on it's accuracy and so on. I have hunted a fair bit with the .500NE and it's in the same ballpark for trajectory and so on. They are really just bigger versions of the .45/70 ballistically they do similar things and there is nothing wrong with that. If it works well, I will hunt it.

Just reading here and saw this about the 577, great project.
Were did you get the bullet mould, is the diameter for the .585 bore?
I have a Francotte Martini in 577 2 3/4 BPE and have only shoot 58 cal minnies so far but they are on small side for the 585 bore but Ihave not found a proper size mould so would be interested in finding one

My bore is .585". I have a number of moulds, there are many made for the .58 that go as big as .590" as I've found anyway. If you have any trouble I can check out the numbers on my moulds, none of them are special to my knowledge.

As luck would have it, my .375 is staying home and I'll be using a John Wilkes .500 Nitro double rifle when I go to Tanzania in July. I've arranged to buy the ammo up front - I'll never again complain about the cost of .416 Rigby brass - so I think a Ruger #1 in .500 Nitro is also in my future. If you guys want a shock go to the Westley Richards web site, and check out the price of Nitro Express loaded cartridges.

Casull - Did you get Bevin King to make your dies, or did you find commercial dies?

Boomer no shock to me........those doubles are big money.

So what, are you using Mark's double for the buff???

That's right - it turns out the rules for transiting the US by air with a firearm have changed, and we can't do it anymore. Apparently there is no change for Canadians travelling into the US with a firearm to hunt, paticipate in matches, or whatever, but you can no longer fly to an overseas destination if you have a firearm in your check in luggage. Our travel agent dragged his feet for so long that there aren't any affordable Air Canada packages left for our travel dates, so we go Northwest/KLM through the US to Amsterdam. I've sent email's to US Customs and to Homeland Security asking for clarification of the legislation, and they said I would have a reply within 15 days. I'm not holding out much hope. It's disappointing, but using a double rifle will add an interesting quality to the trip.
