.577 Snider loading

You need to go here (British Miltaria Forum): http://p223.ezboard.com/fbritishmilitariaforumsfrm2 and digest what is there first.

I'm a bit of a "heretic" there, in that I use only smokeless and have not bought "Coyote's" expensive mold.

Here are some tips:

- Magtech makes 24 ga brass shotshells that are sold by "Rayner Shine"
- Lee makes 1 1/4" dies
- Fiocchi makes plastic 24ga shotshells that provide a lot of fun if you keep the pressure to about 12K (450gr bullet at about 1000 fps)
- bullets are of course cast which is where the problem lies. Your barrel will likely slug somewhere around 0.587", so the common 58 cal 0.577" molds will suck. I came up with the idea of using a 54 cal bullet inside a 24 ga shotcup in the 24 ga Fiocchi which acts as a sabot and brings the overall diameter to about 0.590". No lube needed. I posted lots of details at the British Miltaria Forum as "Andy_P"
- I also made my own 0.590" bullet mold by drilling out a 54 cal mold and tapping to 5/8" NC. I then sized it with a homemade sizer made by drilling a 15mm (0.590") hole through some 1 1/4" threaded rod. Spiral lube groove and works well. See details at the "Cast Boolits" Forum: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=5026&highlight=spiral

The fun never ceases with Sniders.

24 ga Magtech Brass - Rayn'er Shine Gunworks, Lancer Sask (306) 689-2654 raynershine@saktel.net costs about $22.50 + tax for a box of 25, Figure out a way to trim them to length and anneal the crap out of them after every firing. Use Large Pistol Primers.

Lee dies and molds - Higginsons, Hawkesbury, ON. Ask for my man Andrew @ (613) 632-9300, higginsonpowders@on.aibn.com

Fiocchi Stuff - Will Bilozir, Winton, AB (403) 938-6066, no e-mail, leave a message - he's good about getting back

100 Fiocchi 24 ga hulls - about $21.00 + tax. Buy the primer pocket conditioner and you can re-use the hulls a few times if you keep the pressure LOW. Cut them to 2" - you don't need dies! A great way to start out.

200 sporting wads - about $10.00 + tax

P.S. Lee sells a mold for a 0.600" round ball. Perfect for the Snider Enfield.
