590 a1 !

My buddy has the same model and got the VangComp treatment done by Casey at TacOrd. The SG shoots awsome!
Enjoy the new addition...

I have the 590A1 spx with bayonett. Trigger guard and safety are both metal, heavy barrel:shotgun:.

The spx eh? Mind if I ask where you got it from? I was reading about them in a magazine this summer. Also, did it come with a specific bayonet from Mossberg or something? Guys are saying "get the bayonet for it" and you say "with bayonet"... ?

I have some US M7 Bayos that I can click on my 590 if I want to make a spear and get all stabby... as we know any AR-type bayo will fit on there (M9, M10/OKC3S, M11, etc...).

Picked it up from Reliable in Vancouver, the bayonet comes with the gun. Its the ontario M-9 + sheath.

I have to say the SPX does look pretty sweet. I see Frontier has it listed, but they are calling it a "590 SPX" and not "590A1 SPX"... Would there be two different models, or just a typographical oversight?... I checked Mossberg's website and they only show a 590A1 SPX.

Also, the picture on Mossberg's website seems to show that the SPX has a Vang Comp style compensator drilled into the muzzle end of the barrel. DOes yours have this squig808?

I have a 590A1 SPX as well. It has porting on the barrel, but only about 10 holes per side. The Vang porting has a lot more.

BTW, in case any of you care, this porting would present some problems if you decide to use the shotgun to compete in IPSC or any 3-gun matches that use IPSC rules. The porting puts you into Open division, against all the guns with optics, speedloaders, huge mag extensions, etc.

Can't really say if the porting on the 590 makes any difference whatsoever. I'd rather it were not there, but I got a good deal on the gun. The Vang treatment, on the other hand, is a lot more comprehensive than just porting. IIRC the forcing cone is lengthened, and there is some kind of backboring with gradual taper done. I had a Vang barrel on my 870 that shot buckshot like nothing I've ever seen. Shot slugs very well too, but no better than the RemChoke 20" that I have using an Improved choke. Sold the Vang barrel since I only use a tactical shottie for 3-gun, and don't plan on kicking in crack house doors anytime soon ;-)

Why's that? Do you find it has a negative effect or is it just a useless feature?

I own a 590A1 SPX with the barrel ports/venting I would be interested to know what is undesireable about them (except that the collect crud that needs to be cleaned off)... I really had no opinion about them either way.

Nope. I have a 20" 590 "special purpose", speedfeed stock, ghostring sights, bayo lug, etc... It's got a plastic safety and trigger guard. It's not a 590A1 or a 590 SPX. Back in 2007 the 590A1 was harder to come by. I would prefer a 590A1, but I'm not complaining.

My questions were mostly around the bayonet it comes with. The Oct. 2009 issue of "GUNS & Weapons for Law Enforcement" doesn't show or mention anything about a bayonet, although the bayo lug is clearly visible. I guess LEO's aren't big on stabbing bad guys. :p

Damn you guys! All this talking about 590A1's got me worked up for one, so I broke down and bought a 18.5" 590A1 with ghost ring sights. I was interested when I walked into the store but it felt great in my hands and I couldn't say no.

I really like the weight of it compared to all of the 870's I have owned. I'm really looking forward to shooting this gun and seeing what it can do.

I'll probably still get the SPX at some point (assuming that the 590A1 impresses me as much at the range as it did in the store), but I'm still glad I grabbed this one tonight!

I broke down last week and ordered the same gun me too :D

How do you like the speed feed option? I have been looking at a 590A1 and a 500 Tactical and can't make up my mind.
