It has been a coons age since I got to handle and shoot a 14" Mossberg 590A1. Going to finally be picking one up after intenting to for quite some time, and wanted to ask owners their thoughts. 18.5" or the shorty? What did you like or not like about each?

Will be a full length stock and ghost ring model either way.

You need the 20 inch on 590A1 since you can throw a bayonet on it then you will need a 14 inch 590a1 as well because the 20 inch model is a bit heavy, Lol.

14 inch with full stock has better handling and shot as good the 20 inch at 25 meters, not much different with 00.

If you want ghost ring don't you have to go with the 20" instead if the 18 5"?

Van Comp makes a ghost ring with pic rails but they pretty expensive. I believe all A1s come with the ghost rings sights with ears.

Depends on use - 14"s handle better and shoot just as well I find. 18.5"s a bit easier for hunting use. Both built like tanks.

No

Steelfint and KND, did you guys find the 14" any harder to shoot well at all? I remember it being more or less the same, but its been years atop of years at this point.

Unless its waterfowl at quite a distance hunting with it sounds like a good challenge haha

Actually the 14 inch is my favorite, handling better with short barrel like it means to be, for accuracy, it really doesn't matter at 25 meters with 00 bucks. 14 inch and can do what 20 inch can and doing better especially the weight, really noticeable difference.

The main reason, I want 20 inch model is bayonet lug, I have a few bayonets so need some lugs, Lol.

Hope it helps.

Number of shots, and how ever much 4.5" of steel weighs on the barrel/mag, that's the difference.

I've been prancing around the house lately with a 14" 590S with a Magpul butt-stock, and a 18.5" 590A1 (Magpul both ends) to decide which one I'm keeping. The Shockwave is lighter (quite a bit), but that's really about it, you aren't going through a door clean with either.

If you can find one, a 18.5" 590A1 with removable chokes, it's what I'm keeping. The pattern with a mod choke, and Fed LE 00 BS makes about 1" hole at 10 yds. Shotgun, or 25mm Cannon...

As for stocks, Magpul butt, and the plain factory fore-stock.

A 590S is pretty cool, buckshot mini shells are like shooting pistol cartridges, and the the slugs are 1200 fps, pretty much what the law shoots power wise. The factory mod works pretty good, so far the only problem the little bumper popped out, but only once, and I've put 300-400 shells through it. The 590A1 mini shell adapter is less than perfect, pretty good, but a bit unreliable in the cold, and it's a pain to unload. I'm going to remove that, and send it to a new home.

That was a interesting summary to read! Thanks! haha

The 14” handles and shoots pretty good
One thing to note after a while the noise of the short barrel and the lesser weight make range sessions less fun.
So buy the 14 if you will mostly carry it for defense
Buy the 18 if you want a full time shooter
I have a 14 but I think my next pump might be a 590S 18

One 'but' with a 14" barrel is that it can't come with you when you visit the USA (whereas a 18" barrel could).

I owned the 14, 18.5 and 20 inch 590A1 ghost ring versions for all. For coolness I’d go the 14” all the way. The 20” was good for pump action shotgun matches but if it’s a range mostly gun I’d get the shorty.

If you have the shockwave grip on, it's considered a "firearm" not an "SBS"

14" is my preferred choice.

This one is getting a red dot shortly.

Bonus points for fitting perfectly in the lockable storage under certain truck seats.
