Hey all,

I've got a 590A1 Blackwater edition that I'm currently modifying a little, and I need some help from the rest of you 590A1 guys when it comes to sights. It came with a ghost ring in the rear, and this behemoth up front:

Like many other owners of this gun, my front sight came canted from the factory. It's the ramp type sight with the white strip on it, and I despise it. Unfortunately, because of the giant POS that's attached to the barrel, my options are limited.

If I could make something from these guys work, i'd be pretty happy, but I don't think the front will clear the monstrosity on the front of my barrel. https://spitfirearmory.com/products/category/mossberg/

Anyone else deal with this?

The front sight ramp is held on with brazing/solder.
If you get it red hot with a torch, you can pull it off with pliers.

Just be careful that you don't also heat up the barrel lug too much, since it's also brazed/soldered on.

After it's removed; You can either re-attach it with better alignment, or replace it altogether.

A tip to keep heat localized, is a WET rag wrapped around the place you need to keep cool. So I'd wrap it around everywhere close to where you are heating up.

I think if you get the front sight hot enough to remove the silver solder, the mag tube lug on the bottom may be at risk of coming off as well.... Silver solder melts at 800F (430C)

Properly brazing stuff (especially silver solder) isn't really a 'do-it-yourself' type job unless you're experienced.... You need to clean the area (usually oxide blasted prior to soldering, then clean with flux), get silver solder properly applied (usually strips IIRC) and have it aligned properly and clamped in place for it to cool... And if you get the barrel too hot, you can toast any heat treatments it's had.....

If it's that bad, I'm sure Casey at Tactical Ordnance could help out, (shotguns are his 'thing' and he does awesome work) the front sight post is dovetailed in, and you should be able to replace it with whatever suits your fancy afterwords! Or you could put whatever front sight you want on, if you take the old one off...

Or, you can always hacksaw it off, dremel the base off, cold blue it and get a clamp-on front sight!

I contemplated that. Spitfire armory makes a nice clamp on fiber optic front, and has a fiber optic ghost ring rear to match. I'm not really comfortable with getting things red hot and messing with solder and stuff, but I know how to operate both a hack saw and dremel

Here's my advice.

Sell it and buy the US service model or the SPX as it has a nice red fiber optic front sight and an adjustable LPA ghost ring rear sight.

I never liked that blackwater model.

Another complaint with the blackwater 590 is that the front sight is so high that the rear elevation tops/maxes out before being able to line up properly with the front site.

I've read that too. Thankfully I didn't suffer that issue.

I think I'll start looking for an SPX, and put the Blackwater back to OEM and look at selling it to recoup the cost. In the meantime I've thrown a TRS-25 red dot on it to make my life a little easier, but I really don't want to rely on something battery powered in courses or in the bush.

I appreciate the help, guys. I might have a BW 590A1 for sale soon!

Good news, everyone!

An SPX popped up for sale on EE about an hour after I posted that I wanted to find one, so I bought it. I'll peel all my magpul goodies off the Blackwater, and throw them on the SPX when it gets here. My Blackwater is now up for sale to help offset my purchase.

Thanks for all the help!

It did! Something I don't think I'll have much use for until the zombies come, but it's cool nonetheless

Edit: I say "it did" like I got it already. It's supposed to, and it shipped today, so I'll find out tomorrow or Friday haha

It's here!

x1000 internet points for advising me on the SPX. Took me about 10 seconds to realize that this was the right model I was after. As an added bonus, my TRS-25 is a perfect fit, and co witnesses perfectly with the oem sights.

I'm beyond excited to shoot this thing!
