590A1 for the 1st Shotgun?

Sorry but this is not the way to steer a newb towards shooting clays. We all have fun from time to time but he might as well be throwing rocks at the targets with a jerky, unbalanced gun.

Get yourself a 28" barrel if you feel you must have a short barrel for defense.

Clearly sporting clays is not the OP's primary interest, rather owning a short barreled pump is. I'd never underestimate what an experienced hand can do with a short barreled gun, and the way to become experienced is to shoot lots. If you grew up shooting long barreled guns, perhaps they have the best feel to you, but they are not the only answer. Shooting isn't fun unless you're hitting your target, and a 590 provide lots of fun on a wide variety of targets, if that's the type of gun that interests you.

I think these guys are mistaking "shooting clay" with "sporting clay". There's no way you're gonna be shooting the minis or teals with an open choke on a sporting clay course. Shooting random clays with buddies, any shotgun would work. I shoot my norc with hand thrown clays when I go camping.
