590a1 shooting

Hillbilly: I am looking for a 590A1 second-hand. Your results sound very good. The 200M gong shot, was that done with the Ghost Ring sights?

As well, may I ask what sort of flare rounds you were firing? Illumination or crack-shells for bears?

All the best,

Filmbeargun - While shooting at 200 yard targets on a range is interesting, please do not think that it is reasonable to shoot at big game with a 590 at long range. At 200 yards, from a smooth bore shotgun; bullet drop is excessive, energy is low, and accuracy is poor.

Those of us who have being following your threads realize that you are contemplating the use of these guns for bear security at remote camps in the arctic. For this application you should concentrate on shooting from 10-50 yards. If you think that long range shooting is going to be a requirement, such as if people are working some distance from each other, a scoped rifle in the .375 H&H class maybe required - but preferably there should be enough shotgun armed bear monitors so no group of people is working without protection.

Hello fellow 590a1 owner :)
I was goign to write up another thread , but this seemed along the lines of the same topic. Sorry for the Hijacking of this thread. Anyhow I just purchased a 590a1 but wanted to ask , the manual states that our shotgun can fire 2 3/4 shells and 3 magnum shells... i was wondering is there a diff between 3 magnum and regular 3 inch shells? Basically can our shotgun take 3 inch shot shells? And why does Mossberg advertise the 590a1 with a lower shot shell size aka 2 3/4 instead of 3 inch shot shells? Just wanted to ask to be on the safe side ,don't want to blow out the new barrel.

I have shot all manner of 23/4" and 3" shells in my 590 without difficulty. The advantage of 3" shot shells is that you can put more pellets on the target. I shoot 3" slugs because that's what is the easiest for me to get here, but in penetration tests I can't see any advantage over the 23/4" slugs.

shoudl just get a nice 18 inch defender and load it with alternating 000 and slugs....

as far as 2 3/4 or 3" shells - If the firearm is rated for 3" magnums you can shoot any 12 gauge of a shorter length, that includes all standard 3", 2 3/4" magnums and non magnums. Just to clarify this one, simple, point.....
