590A1 - Very Stiff Fore End (Not So With 590 Shockwave)

Ok, so I took out a few mossbergs tried them,, 1-590a1 marine coat, 2-590's and a plain 500, all slick however the 590a1 marine coated version was a bit stiff at each end of the throw that the others were not, the spring retainer is intact in all of them. The Marine coat version has not been fired much however my personal feeling is that (in my case at least) it feels like the actual coating is thick enough to cause a wee bit of stiffness at the end of throw which I figure will break in with more use. It isn't stiff except at the ends and if you do it quickly cannot notice it ,yours may be a different issue as my mag tube is not out of round at all and the caps screw on easily, Good luck.
Cheers Bob

Yeah I took advantage of the warranty and in discussing with Wolverine, they suspect it's more than just the end cap or the retaining clip - it may very well be the magazine tube being out of spec. Just as well that I am sending it in - they can probably look the rest of it over and maybe fix any other issues.

Yeah, the problem is more than a bit of stiffness - I had my son's friend, a hulking 6' 4" guy try loosening and tightening it. He couldn't. So definitely not normal.

Happy to know that Wolverine is sending an RMA pre-paid label so the ride both ways costs me nothing (unlike other dealers where they expect the customer to pay for the ride to their facility).

Have you tried to work the action with the barrel removed? Do the action bars move freely? It sounds like it is binding on something. I would check to make sure that the action bars are straight and parallel. If one is bent or crooked it can rub on the receiver and cause friction or binding.
So if the action works nicely without the barrel and then once the barrel is in goes back to binding - what could be the problem then? Thanks

Hoppes #9 is an oil, and will run and drip, grease is a thicker product that will mostly stay where you put it unless things are really moving fast!

What Guntech is trying to tell you is that a "soaking wet with oil gun" is not what you want. Dry off the access oil. the finish of the parerkized finish of the 590A1 should absorb and hold some oil which will help for corrosion resistance, and there are a few places.

The other things people are suggesting is that sometimes with cheap low brass shells they can get stuck in the chamber after firing making them harder to extract and suggesting that the chamber might need to be polished a bit to help with that, but in your case it sounds like yours is stiff running snap caps or just cyling the action with the action release and no shells at all.

I don't find the 590A1's to be the smoothest pump actions to begin with, maybe yours is just a bit on the stiff side of that and has some rough spots or burrs that need to be worked out.

Here's a checklist with suggestions of where to polish, Grease and Oil.

Especially if you run your gun outdoors in cold weather. The Germans found that out in the suburbs of Moscow...

My new 590A1 Retro cycling was kinda gross. Sandy, grindy, not at all smooth, especially when compared to my older Wingmasters. Guys like Butcherbill educated me on Parkerizing and how to treat it, and while it's still not silky like a Wingmaster, it is like a smooth bank vault lock up now. True North gives good advice. Lube it, oil the parkerize, and run it. It will smooth out.
