Hey fellow shooters. I have a 597 that I really likre shooting but it jams quite often with 30 rd mags and sometimes with the 10 rd mag. I was using remington ammo. Any ideas out there on what I can do? I plan on trying differnt ammo next time

My gunshop said to use high velocity ammo for semi auto rimfires, lower velocity might not generate enough force to cycle the next round. I've also heard that it can have something to do with mag feed lips, with metal being more reliable than plastic. I just bought that model actually, though have yet to fire it, so no personal experience.

the rules of owning a 597
loosen the guide rods and run them quite dry
swap out the hammer and extractor for vq parts
free float the barrell
sand down your 30 rd mags to ensure they fall free and also fully insert
and never use remington ammo.

ive had good luck with win 555

Rule #1 to owning any semi-auto rim-fire firearm is to try lots of different brands of ammo to see which ones both cycle well and are accurate.

Your mistake was buying a 597. They are notoriously finicky. I suggest selling the 597 and buying a Ruger 10-22. They are a lot more reliable and there are far more aftermarket parts available. And, dont buy Remington ammo. Remington ammo is known to be the worst of all the major brands. Try CCI Minimags and Federal 525 bulk packs. I find them to be the most reliable for the price. The CCI's would be the higher priced/quality one of the two.

Not always true, I had mine running like a top.

Loosen guide rod screws and install finger tight. VQ extracor/hammer, and proper ammo choice wil get you where you want to be.

High velocity ammo like stingers will cycle the action a little harder, but tuning and finding the right ammo will get you there too.

I've fired a 597 plenty, I've never seen problems I wasn't expecting, the 10-rounders didn't load 10 at first and jammed, but after they wore in they'll take all 10, and the only jams I've had with a 30-round was when I overloaded one in the winter. There was one time the trigger ceased to function for about 5 minutes, then it regained its functionality, and as far as I know that rifle has not had that same problem since.

The 597 is a cheap, accurate, and fun gun, but you can't expect everything to be amazing right away, sometimes parts need some breaking in, especially the magazines, though I didn't have problems with either the black or clear one, other than the black not holding it open, or the factory one, that were not to be expected without getting them worn in first. Once the mags loosen up, they should be fine.

As for the ammo, people always say never use Remington ammo, the times I've fired this particular 597 I've used mainly Remington's cheapest, dirtiest, crappiest Remington Gold hollow-point ammo that comes in bricks and leaves a "gold" dust everywhere, it cycled that as well as it did the Winchester and Federal I fired through it.

As for the lubricant used on this gun, as far as I know it was some form of CLP, the owner of the gun I used swears by it.

The 597 is fine as long as you back off the guide rods. Mine had ftf or fte every mag. I spent 10 minutes with it apart(backed out the rails, polished hammer and floated the barrel) and it hasn't jammed since.

The 30 round mag is a pos out of the box. Once worn in it should be fine.

Yeah, thats just it though. Every 10-22 I have ever owned worked just fine right out of the box. My old one has at least 50000 rounds through it and it still functions just fine. I didnt even clean it when I was a young kid for thousands of rounds and it still worked fine until it got really really bad. The only time it ever had any FTF, FTE, exc was when I was using cheap old plastic Eagle mags that the feed lips were worn on. Learned that stock Ruger 10 rounders and Butler Creek steel lips 25 rounders are the way to go. Since then, its been years and I rarely see a problem unless its ammo related. Almost everyone I know that has a 597 and even the ones I tried had/have problems. Its just not the same level of firearm as a 10-22. And, I generally like Remington firearms. I have had many. I do hear that there qc has been down lately however. This is not just my opinion either. Run a search or start a poll. The 597 is not worth the trouble imo. I never look back now that I have tried and used a 10-22. There is a reason it is generally thought to be the best .22lr semi-auto ever created and has not changed much in almost 50 years.

I have had 6 and if the guide rods were adjusted they ran like a top I even have an HB version in 22mag and it fuctions Flawless . The stock 597 tend to be a bit more accurate than a stock 1022. I Have built well over 20 10/22's and it is still my go to .22 and yes they are a great gun but they have had there problems as well . the 597 had some bad mags when first came out ,but now if you adjust the guide rods you should be golden

10/22's are nice. just picked one up in fact.

But if properly adjusting the guide rods is all it takes to make it run smooth is that really considered not running right out of the box?

Ditto. I had the same problem. New, out of the box, I thought both the gun and the mag were both POSs as the gun jammed constantly. Shortly afterward, after more 30 round mags went through it, the gun seemed to "loosen up" some and the mag fed fine and the gun ejected fine as well. I am using the Fed bulk pack ammo and everything seems good at this point. I guess both mag and gun needed a break in period. I had two ten round mags also; one was fine but the second was crap. It too, however, started to behave itself after a break in period.

Can some give me more info, pm me with more info on the vq hammer and extractor were to get it and cost. Plus hoe to free float the barrel. I got a used one with no manual. I understand how to do the guide rods. Thanks in advance.

Note just realized this is just for 597 rifle. I have the vtr so I guess you can't free float the barrel, so can I still change the hammer and extractor to vq?

lol

I love my 597. I'm down to a dozen .22's, and 10/22's are no longer allowed on the premises. You do have the ability to trade accuracy for something that can be dressed up... Never doubt the strength of opinion though.

I found that my 30 rd mags actually worked better with 25 in them for the first while. Once they were broken in, all went slick. I am not a fan of Remington Ammo, but mine will cycle it (thunderbolts, and sub-sonics). It also loves Fed Champions (525 bulk pack) CCI Blasers (minimags too!). AE to name a few.

Yes, it is. When you buy a firearm, aside from some break in period, you should not have to do anything with them to make them fire reliably. The factorys QC should take care of that. And, that is now that they worked a bunch of the bugs out. The earlier ones were terrible I hear. And, they still have factory mags that dont work properly or at least that dont run smooth until worn in. Every Ruger mag I and everyone I know has worked flawlessly out of the box. As, for the accuracy, I am not sure about the new 10-22 as mine are all modded but, my old one could hit pennies at 100 yards when I was like 12 years old. As you said though, the 597 is not a bad gun. I just think given the choice the 10-22 is a better option.

Changed faith!

I wish to rescind any negativity I've ever expressed about the 10/22. Based on the above, I will purchase (yet another) one. That's some very serious accuracy from a shooter of any age.

Never seen a factory 10/22 do that out of the 20+ I have owned ............. guess I am a bad shot or just was unlucky with all the ones I have owned . I probley spent close to 10k trying to get that kind of accuarcy modding the 10/22s I have owned ....................Damm if I could of only found a bone stock one that would shoot like that !!!!:dancingbanana:
