597 jams with 30 rd mag

Never seen a factory 10/22 do that out of the 20+ I have owned ............. guess I am a bad shot or just was unlucky with all the ones I have owned . I probley spent close to 10k trying to get that kind of accuarcy modding the 10/22s I have owned ....................Damm if I could of only found a bone stock one that would shoot like that !!!!:dancingbanana:

X2 on this!
I spent a lot on 10/22 as well with all the volquartsen bells and whistles and... the damn thing still jams up on the 2nd 3rd or 4th round, depending on how I hold my tongue when firing..:p using federal match ammo and a butler creek steel lips 25 round mag.
Its a royal piss off when you throw $1k at a 10/22 and the damn thing still jams ...:kickInTheNuts:

I couldnt hit those pennies every time but, still not bad for a stock birch 10-22 with a cheapo Bushnell on it. I do have a feeling those old ones were better shooting then the new ones though. I know my gfs new one isnt near that accurate. She still bounces a pop can up the burm at 100 meters though. I can hit 1.5 inch chalk disks at 150 and 200 meters with my highly modded SR-22 on a calm day off the bench. At 100 meters I can hit those same disks like nothing. I bet I could shoot 5 of them in a row in like 10-15 seconds without missing. And thats with Federal 525 bulk pack ammo. This summer with a spotter I hit a pop can at 300 meters with it. It took me a bunch shots to compensate and feet of hold over but, thats still impressive. I should shoot a group at 100 meters this spring and post it.

It is probably an ammo problem, cleaning problem or you got a lemon with an issue. All of mine rarely ever jam unless I use ammo or mags they dont like or let them get too dirty. I think a lot of the problems with 10-22s are aftermarket mag related. If I use just the stock Ruger ones Jams almost never happen.

Can some give me more info, pm me with more info on the vq hammer and extractor were to get it and cost. Plus hoe to free float the barrel. I got a used one with no manual. I understand how to do the guide rods. Thanks in advance.

Note just realized this is just for 597 rifle. I have the vtr so I guess you can't free float the barrel, so can I still change the hammer and extractor to vq?
Ian

yes you can still change the hammer and extractor the receiver is the same
not sure where to get the parts anymore i picked mine up from rimfire sports when they shipped to canada.

both my 30rd mags won't feed right when loaded full up i have just come to terms with them being 25 rd mags and the work much better that way

I have two 30rnd and five 10rnd mags for my 597. All seem to work flawlessly when i buy ammo in bricks. When I buy bulk ammo (525 loose in box etc) i get jams. Not sure why.
