SIR has the synthetic/blued 597 with 3-9 32mm scope for $199. They also have the all weather 10/22 for $230.

Not looking for an heirloom piece, just something cheap to shoot that I can buy 25-30+ round mags for.:D

WSS has the 30 round 597 mags for $22. The cheapest hot-lip 25 rounders for the 10/22 I can find are $35+. I would like about 4 of them, giving me 100 rounds of SHTF zombie firepower. :p


Whats the going consensus?

I have the 597 with the scope and it works great. I just purchased another 30 round mag and was told at the gun store that as of jan 1st the American government is going to stop the flow of these mags to Canada. So be sure to buy a bunch soon. Just my 2 cents.
 
I like the feel of my 597 more than my 10/22. I had the 597 first so I may be biased. As for the 25-30 round mags. I have seen them for the 597 for around $20. I have not seen a 10/22 mag anywhere lately.
 
I have both in the target models. Right now I'd give the nod to the 10/22.

The barrel on my 597 is extremely ammo sensitive. I've read other reports of this as well. The 10/22 is far more forgiving with lots of ammo. The 10/22 10 round mags are the best. The 597 ones are Ok but pale compared to the 10/22.

With the 10/22 you know exactly what you're getting. With the 597 there's a lot more unknowns and less ways to fix it if something doesn't work out. If your barrel doesn't shoot, you're SOL. This is changing and in the future may not be an issue, but right now it is.

If I was only to have one. It would be the 10/22.
 
I was planning on purchasing a 597 earlier this year because it was on special at a local store but upon further review (taking with others) they all recommended the 10/22 over the 597.. so I ended up going with the all weather 10/22 and couldn’t be happier.. I would also buy the steel lips (over time the plastic mags spit from what I’m told)

Quite - I like the 10/22 with the full-size stock (the factory "rifle" version)....I have no idea how people shoulder the shorter CRR model...But Remington sure seems to know how to make firearms that "feel" like a rifle. :cool:

Three 10-22's bought and sold in standard and deluxe models. They worked fine but fought with them to get to the sights.

I own three Remington semis, 2 X 552 Deluxe Speedmasters and one 597 HB target laminate. That 597 is twice the gun of the Ruger 10-22's that I owned for both accuracy and general pleasure to shoot / comfort to hold.
 
10/22. You can do alot with this firearm. The action can be polished up for no cost, just a bit of time with a dremmel tool. Get an older one, or if new, make sure it doesn't have the plastic trigger guard. Mine is not picky on ammo, shoots subsonics easily.
