597 vs. 10/22 - final decision

So i ended up with a 10/22 compact last week.

I finally got to take it up to the farm and empty a couple of boxes through
her. I went through about 300 rounds since I bought the gun, and it hasn't
misfired once. I'm very pleased with my purchase, and thank you for all the input!

I do have a couple more questions though..

I want to buy larger capacity magazines, and I've seen a few "double-stack"
25 rounders that look like they would be perfect. Where would you suggest I
shop for this? (in terms of price, quality etc...)

I am also interested in some type of optic setup (in the $200-300 range)
Any suggestions there? I need something mid, to long range.

I also had an idea recently to carve, and machine a stock myself out of
some darker, better looking wood. I have access to a milling machine, and I
assume it's not impossible to shape a stock, (with some prior knowledge of
woodworking).. Is there anyone out there who has done this themselves?

I know new stocks aren't too pricey, however it would still be $100 I save
in the long run.

Anyways, let me know what you guys think!

in the mean time, I'm back off to the farm with a truckload of ammo!!

I have made a few stocks over last few years. This is usually emotionally rewarding work, not a money saver. And a chance to create something that nobody else will ever have.

As to inexpensive scopes in 200-300$ range - I would generally call those expensive. I am big fan of ncstar line of scopes, all of them I tried were decent. Do not shop for higher magnification, 22's are short range cartridge. Shop for bigger tube, 40mm would be the smallest one you want. Also look for parallax adjustable function on the scope, without it you will lose accuracy and clarity at shorter ranges. Fixed parallax scopes may look cheaper but only good for CF rifles. Another good thing to have on your scope would be adjusting knobs instead of screws. Ah, almost forgot reticle thing, I find so much popular lately mildot being overrated, P4 sniper reticles give clearer picture and better versatility IMHO.
