i just bought a 597 vtr and a 30 mag and the thing wont feed 3 rounds before it fails to feed. is this a common problem? i was useing wildcat ammo cheap stuff but i expect it to at least feed regardless. anyone else with the same prob?

Never tried the 597 magazine, but I have experience with 10/22 magazines, and I know you have to "work them in" a bit before they get reliable. I was really dissapointed with the butler creek hi-cap magazines the first time I shot them, they jammed up all the time. Now they run perfect. Hope that helps you out.

Check the springs and see if they are broken in the mag. If not check the follower and see if there is any wierd bumps. If still not loosen up the tension screw's located at the rear of the reciever just a bit to see if the guide rods allow movement. As a side note most 597's will work smoothly with CCI Blazer ammo.

I bought one 30 round mag along with my VTR. I figure I'll try it out. If it works like crap I'll just stock up on 10 rounders instead.
Besides, the rifle looks like #### with the banana mag in it. Nice and clean lines with the 10 rounder.

Mine wouldn't feed either... I popped the bottom off the mag, folded up a piece of a cigarette pack, used it for a shim and it works perfect.

The spring in mine was weak and the bullet tips would stick on the seam where the mags are glued/molded together... I agree they are piss poor quality.

i think the problem with mine is a weak spring. the vtr looks cool with a black 30 rounder though i must say.

ill be stocking up on the 10rnd ones i think. they feed great.

Try the Federal 525 Box. This feeds well in my Ruger 10/22 magazine and my brothers 597 magazine.

I agree. I had good sucess with the federal 525 HV in my 597 30 rounder.

Try pulling the spring and follower out. I stretched my spring a bit (worked for me, maybe not for you) and hit the sides of the follower with some sand paper and oil. The mag functions fine now. Sometimes i think its a combo of both mag and 597.

The mags seem to be picky about ammo.
