Hi,

I thinking of getting a Remington 597 w/ scope combo but just want some feedback / reviews of what people think of them. How are the scopes? I am also considering spending a little more and getting the 597ss and putting my own scope on it (bushnell sportsman 3-9x40). If anyone has the SS any feedback would be appreciated. Is there any other benefits to the SS other than the stainless barrel? Keeping in mind that this will be my first gun and I want it to be a good one that lasts and I will enjoy.

thanks

In my experience, the combo cannot be beat for the price. If you want a fun plinking and gopher rifle for a great price, this is it. The only issue I have found is that you may have to re-mount the scope as the ones I have seen were cocked slightly.
I would stay away from anything stainless in a 597 as they are not as accurate from what I have seen. I'm not sure if Remington is not set up properly for tooling stainless on its 597's or just what it is.
Save your money for something else and just go with the combo, you won't regret it.

It's a great rifle. Do yourself a favour and also buy the upgraded hammer and extractor. They made my rifle many times better.

There are also 30 round magazines available for the 597. My advice is to only load 27 or 28 rounds if you get them. Link

Rimfire Sports ships to Canada. It takes a couple of weeks sometimes but it's worth it. I had a >$200 order and had no taxes or brokerage when it arrived.

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies, you have made up my mind. Thanks for the tips on the add-ons. The trigger sounds great, every review seems really good.

Just an FYI - They are currently out of stock on the 30rd clips at Rimfire sports

Diesel, consider 597 "Yellow Jacket" package as well. I know it is substantially more expensive, but if your approach is to buy a good thing - have a good look at Yellow Jacket. I have had mine for almost a year now and its real beauty in my collection.

'cept they're ugly as sin. buddy of mine starts to curse and swear if I just say the word 'yellow jacket'. I do it on purpose now just for the reaction! LOL!!!

The Yellow Jacket may not be everyone's favorite but it's extremely comfortable and a joy to shoot. I love mine and highly recommend to anyone trying it. Don't like yellow? Sand it and stain it. ;)

or if you look around you can find one of these

I bought the cheap 597 ($159 at Cabella's) comes with genuine Tupperware stock and regular barrel. I then bought a boyd's evolution or "yellow jacket" stock on eBay ($100). Installed a Bushnell 4-12x40 scope ($114), and removed the stock sights.

Don't waste money on an after market hammer, polish your hammer and sand the bushing slightly to center the hammer and allow easy movement of the hammer, I also reversed the hammer spring, around 4lbs trigger pull now. (about 10 out of the box)

So, for $373 +tax I have a very reliable rifle that shoots M.O.A. @ 100yards and handles amazingly well.... 10/22 eat your heart out :)
