Quick question for anyone who had a remington 597. What upgrades do you recommend? I just replaced the complete extractor with oem parts, but i modified it a little to modify make it work better. I had it out today and no ftf or fte in the 30 I shot.

I had one for about a year. First gun i ever bought. Tacticooled it in an archangel stock, foregrip and red dot. It's gone now.

But my only advise is keep it super clean and use top shelf ammo. I only used mini mags 40gr round nose and almost never had extraction failures with mine.

I kind of miss my 597. But at the end, it was just sitting in my safe collecting dust. The funds I got for it went towards a 4.25" S&W model 19.

VQ Hammer is about the only readily available thing you can get for it. I'd be interested in trying a custom barrel, Jarvis seems to be the only one making replacements at this time. She's a pretty solid plinker out of the box, doesn't need much.

My 597 vtr (ar clone) would not extract well put in a volquartsen hammer and extractor kit now it fires anything I feed it is reliable and with the new hammer has a very nice trigger

When I had one, I upgraded to the Volquartzen? hammer and that was it for parts. I backed out the guide rod screws a bit to keep the guide rods from possibly binding, and put some aluminum tape on each side of the action so it fit tight in the stock. Also hogged out the barrel channel slightly so it was truly free floating.

I have done NOTHING to mine or my sons. I have probably 4000 rounds through mine, if not more. The only problem I had was with the bolt hold open spring failing early on. I fixed that ($5) and it's been great since. I have the heavy barrels version, as does my son and we both like them a lot more than our 10/22's.

Like most guys here have done, I put a Volquatsen hammer and extractor and that is it. I've had my 597 for about 5 years now and I don't even remember how many rounds I put through it.

I did bring it with me last year for some partridge hunting and I was 10/10.

I bought a heavy barrel 597 last year and love it; except for the heavy trigger pull. It will be getting the Volquatsen hammer and extractor kit to bring it up to snuff. Otherwise I'm very happy with it's accuracy.

Is there a way to fix the horrid trigger pull? My BIL has one and I have shot it a ton, but the trigger compared to the accutrigger on my Savage always makes me think there is something wrong with it. It breaks reasonably crisply, but sometimes I wonder if my finger wil break before the trigger.

Ditto here with the hammer and extractor upgrade. I also stopped using the hicap mags and got a few aftermarket 10 rounders (the heavy-a$$ metal ones) and it will shoot anything.
