5R 300 win mag .....

If I really want to clear our range out, I just whip out the Weatherby 30-378 with the muzzle brake attached and let a few rounds rip, then sit back and watch the pickups start up and the sound of gear getting packed up! That is of course after all the swearing about how loud the gun is ;)

It really depends who is shooting and what they are shooting at the range, I don't see too many muzzle brakes so I ask people prior if they are there first, if I am there first, then I don't worry about it :)

It will make your rifle a pleasure to shoot with a good brake...common courtesy is nice, but you are a member too.
Will it piss people off?.....Probably.
Will you shoot well without a brake on an extended range session?.....Probably not.

I tried this and it works

At a range any braked gun will pi$$ people off.

I wouldn't want to shoot a 300WM without a brake unless it's only a few shots.

I have one on mine. Out of consideration if Im next to someone at the range I just remove it. It makes me appreciate it when its on.

Install muzzle brake? ABSOLUTELY yes. You want to be able to shoot more without the worry of sore shoulder and or wincing when anticipating the shot #1 and also your groups will be far more consistant. As for the others at the range you are going to a shooting range not a library this is why hearing protection is used. But seriously most consistant range goers realize the importance of a brake for consistancy and duration of shooting and are willing to accept the extra noise and yes I have shot both my .300 win braked and my .338 lapua braked without anyone ever complaining to me. So far lol

Last time I checked, everyone there wears hearing protection. There is a muzzle blast, but it can be remedied as suggested before by setting our bag in between you and the guy next to you. but you have paid you dues as well, maybe take some turns shooting if the range isn't too busy, there are a few ways to approach it by being as considerate as possible. There are some ranges out there I have seen that shoot through a plastic pipe with carpet stapled to the inside, I thought that was pretty cool and considerate, it may not be an option where you shoot though, not sure.

Bag in between is a good option. ;)

.... and yes, all are wearing ear protection anyways.

Was checking out one of our LGS in this area and was qouted $80 per hour to install the brake and will take about 4 - 5 hours. Is that a very close estimate?

Was thinking of a few muzzle brake option.

If I can get these:

American Precision Arms
Holland

Can you guys recommend me what is a good brake to get?

Thanks

Just put your range bag between the two of you...

I just warn people on either side of me that my 338 Lapua is loud and after a few shots offer to let anyone left standing around a chance to try it.
No one says no to trying my DTA SRS.

I do most of my shooting during the week though so there isn't usually many people around to worry about.

It's a gun range, no one is there for the peace and quiet. Just be courteous and give a friendly warning to those around you before you start.

$80/hour, four or five hours to install a brake?
That's silly.
I shudder to think what the charge would be for installing an unthreaded, unchambered barrel.

I compete in Precision Rifle. Just about everyone uses a braked rifle. The shooting advantages are significant. A braked .300 Mag. is a bit loud. Hearing protection and a rangebag/hardcase baffle work wonders.

[5R 300 win mag ..... "Main use of the rifle will be in the range. Covered shooting tables."]
It's in my opinion that yes you would "be pissing off other shooters."
I say this as I have done this even though I had advised my fellow shooters that it's going to extremely loud and watch the pickups start up and the sound of gear getting packed up! That is of course after all the swearing about how loud the gun is.
As for installing a muzzle brake only you can decide.

I thought that was the norm until I dropped by another LGS about 10 minutes away from the range that I shoot.

The lady that I talked to said they charge $100 for service / labour to install the brake. No per hour charges what so ever.

Now that got me shaking my head with the first store I went to .... $80 / hour WOW !!!

I did manage to get a pound each of Retumbo and H1000 .... this was the store that charges only $100.

Hmmmmm .... they might see me again. :p
