6-24x50 too much for AR15?

Hey guys,

I am building an AR15 bench gun for shooting up to 600 yards.

Do you think a 6-24x50 sightron is too big of a scope?

I really enjoy large magnification optics but some people saying 24x is crazy for an AR15...

Thoughts?
 
Ok. Well I took that Kreiger that you got me a slapped together a pretty nice 22" AR that would hold around 1/2 moa pretty regular. Really for SR there is no need for anything that shoots that tight because the bulls are quite large. On the flip side it is nice to have one that shoots where the sight picture was when the trigger broke. Anyways alls I had optics wise was a Mark 4 6.5-20. I figured I'd take it back to NSCC to shoot the nationals with and hopefully kick some ass. I already knew from talking to lots of other high end shooters that while 20x would be nice out at 4 and 500m, the 6.5x at 100 and in might be an issue. We shoot some pretty small and fleeting targets from 100m and in to 25m. You need to be able to see both your target # up on the berm AND your target together at the same time otherwise, when 60 targets all come up at once and start moving, you may end up crossfiring and not even know it. Well to make a long story short I know I lost points because it was hard to get on the correct target as quickly as I should have and I found I was taking too much time trying to make a perfect shot because of being able to see so much of the target. Even at 6.5. The fibua match I think I only got a couple off out of 10 because I was pissing around trying to find the right target#. So for the close in stuff MAX 4x would be where I would start. I think something in the 3-15x range would be perfect. Had a chance to play with a 2.5-10 vortex and that would work pretty well also. Just my 2 cents.
 
And as a side thought I'd probably run a 2FP just to keep that reticle the same size at whatever mag you were at. I think there is something to be said for having the same sight picture at whatever distance you are at be it in close and dirty or way back there.
 
The x24 magnification is good for intending shooting to 600 meters.
Go ahead with that sort of scope.
About the never ending question on FFP or SFP I would say that the FFP is perfect for long range shooting and range finding as well as quick target acquisition without touching your elevation knob.
It is all about the way you use it and the way you like it !

LS, when I was looking at SR with the BCRA, I don't recall any stage under 200m or thereabouts. I think there was a run down where you shot with the rifle at 200 then ran down closer and finished with the HG????

In the back of my mind, I only saw shots 100m to 600m with the vast marjority 200 to 600m. Under this course of fire, the 6-24 should work. I love mag and at 600m, field of view is still large enough to see those pesky numbers on the hill. I would want FFP cause if I ever figured out the hold off for the movers, it would always be the same hash mark regardless of the mag I left the scope at.

At least, that is the theory.

If there were CQB stages on another day, I would just swap on a SIII1-7X24 IRMOA. A true 1x so you can literally see and aim at your feet. 7X is still plenty good if you need to shoot further. If you were not addicted to mag, the 7X can let you center a Fig11 target at 600m no problem. Reticle would let you holdover no problem

I don't recall seeing short and long relays all on the same day??? But then a scope swap would only take a few seconds.

There are plenty of rings that can go on and off without serious loss of zero so swapping scopes wouldn't pose a problem for me.

Ok well sure give it a try! Like I did ;) Although you can do it if you like,generally service rifle shooters don't use the "golf bag" approach. Use one rifle and stick to it. Everything we do is service oriented. In combat you aren't going to take your sight off and put another one on. But whatever you wanna try go for it.
There are matches down to 100m in the 1-12 but there is also a Fibua match from 100-25. You WILL have a hard time acquiring the target ,holding and getting 4 shots off on a figure 14 Huns head in 3 seconds on 6x. Trust me I'm pretty practiced at it and it was an issue for me at NSCC.
As for 6x at 100m well I'm sure you can see the targetry and numbers at the same time BUT there is this thing I like to refer to as " make it too perfectness". This is where I can clearly see all the features of the target at close distance and it seems to make people take too much time waiting for the absolutely perfect moment to break the shot. Sometimes this results in a non fired shot or a miss because instead of just getting on the target and making the gun fire and possibly taking a 4 pointer instead of a bull or a V, the person waits for that perfect V sight picture and ends up too slow on a 3 second exposure. Those targets go up and come down very suddenly!

I do like the point on aiming TOO well. Yes, I have experienced that so understand how mag can slow you down.

I will have to just give it a try and see how it works out. I know the 100yds at 6X is no problem. Its the 50yds and closer that will pose a problem. focus, if nothing else.

How about putting a dot sight above the scope for those in your face stages?

Sure why not? Give it a try. You will learn a lot your first couple of matches. We will also be running some cqb matches in kamloops when the weather turns. You should come and give that a shot as well. Might be a good venue to iron out a few kinks before the bcra matches.
 
Now you need to give me some dates as I would love to come up to Kamloops.

Assume you are shooting to 500m. Any info, course of fire, whatever. Love to try, and learn what kit to even start with.

Give me as much notice as possible as there are a few local shooters that are into 3 Gun that I am sure could be convinced to come up.

If running under DCRA/BCRA rules, put up a link so I can send to these other shooters and we can start to prep.

there are over 1000 scope variations out there, which means you will get well over 1000 different opinions if you ask enough people. Heck ya, if you want that kind of mag on your AR then of course its great. Schmidt and bender makes a dedicated 10M air rifle scope, any idea what the mag on it is??? 5.5-25, for 10M

My 22's sport 36 power scopes. I like to see things. why guess when you just don't have too??
