So I shoot a 6.5-06 and I think it's a great cartridge, I get 140 bergers going about 2840 fps using load info from Berger. When I load them up there is quite a bit of room left in the case to get yourself into high pressure territory using h4831sc. Maybe I don't quite understand how the volume in a case relates to pressure but what would be the advantage of going to an ackley case? Is the obvious answer that they are just run at a higher pressure because there is still lots of room left in a regular 6.5-06. Anybody have one or know more about this?

Depending on the action, improved cases do not feed well from the mag.

With the 6,5-06, going 3000fps with a 140gr VLD should be no problem at all. you may need to use h1000 to keep pressure in check.

In general, pressures are run above stand and into magnum territory.

I shot the 260improved/ 6.5 mystic for years and it is a wonderful case. You have way more case volume so should be able to go as fast with less pressure.

I enjoyed my time with the 6.5-06.

Lots of room left but you cant compare exactly from 6.5-06 to 270 because of the bore / case ratio...need slower powder. I did find H4831 accurate in 6.5-06 but the velocity really pics up with RL-25...as mentioned H1000 would be a good pick too.

You would get less stretching and bit more velocity out of the ackley but as usual that comes at a cost. You decide if you really need it....brass availability is such a non issue that I dont' care if I have to toss some out after they have been trimmed a few times. Mine is a hunting rifle so It does not see that many rounds as a target gun.
 
To tell the truth, I have always felt the 6.5-06 AI to be a waste. I agree with the others that H4831 is about the fastest powder I would use and prefer H1000 and Rel25 as well.

There is already so much case capacity that can't be utilised that it hardly makes sense to add more for a very dubious if any gain.

6.5 bullets, are quite long for calibre, once you get over 130 grains and require a tighter twist rate. If you have a 1-9 or slower twist rate, you should also consider having the reamer throat section shortened to accomodate the shorter bullets required for stabilisation.

I have a 6.5-06 that I picked up from eagleye several years ago and it shoots 140grain flat base bullets well. It has a 1-9 twist. If I try to shoot shorter bullets or boat tail bullets, the groups open up to IMHO is unacceptable for hunting purposes, let alone match shooting. Even then, I have to keep the velocity as high as I can safely get it to get decent accuracy.
 
Mine has a 8.5 twist and shoots great at 2840 fps. I'll probably stick with that load for hunting for now but I do have some h1000 on hand to try. From what I have dug up I'm thinking to start at about 52 grains and work up
