6.5-06 and RL 25?

I have tried it in the 6.5X55 and with a 140 gr Hornady AMAX at 3.200" over 54.0 grs (a full case) of RL25. I got 2950 fps from a 28" barrel - I could get no higher with any other powder at sane pressures. Unfortunately, try as I did, I could not get it to be as accurate as a much slower load of H4350 (46.0 grs).

I'd try up to a full case in the 6.5-06 - you'll likely get no higher MV with any other powder, but accuracy might not be optimum.
 
I would think that anything that works in the 25-06 or the 270 should work in your 6.5-06.

Never thought to try it in the 6.5x55 when I had one, now I'm wishing I did.

Does 52 gr sound like a reasonable starting point?

If it's a strong action (mine's a Mauser M98) and your loaded OAL is at least 3.200", then yes.


I would think that anything that works in the 25-06 or the 270 should work in your 6.5-06.

25-06 - yes, you'll be a little under its pressure in a 6.5-06
270 - not necessarily, you'll be a little over its pressure in a 6.5-06
 
Loaded 10 with RL 22 going up in .5gr (2 of each weight) and 10 with RL 25, all with 130 gr Bergers. Will try them out as soon as I can track down the chronograph and post the results. Not really expecting great accuracy right off the bat with the Bergers, but might get lucky.
 
Just got back from the range and had some fairly decent results with the RL 25 and IMR 4350.

RL 22 was the least impressive, velocity wise. Started with 51 gr and went up to 53 (book max) in .5gr increments. 51 gr produced 2751 fps and 53gr was 2858 fps.

With the RL 25, I started at 51gr (2728 fps) and worked up to 56.5 for 3045fps. Managed to shoot a 5/8" 3-shot group with the top load, which made me quite happy!!

Probably the most surprising (to me, anyway) was the IMR 4350. Just for fun (I honestly wasn't expecting great results), I loaded 5 rounds from 48 gr to 50 gr (.5gr over book max) to try out. 48gr produced 2900fps and 50gr was 3008fps. The surprising part was that all 5 shots produced a 1 1/8" group. Will definately be doing some more work with this powder.

No pressure signs whatsoever with any of the rounds. All of the primers looked good, and extraction was not an issue at all. I'm quite happy with the velocities, but will see if I can improve on them a little with the 4350 and RL 25.

I'm not sure how much more work you want to do, but if RL-25 worked well, then both H1000 and Retumbo might be worth a try, right up to full cases. You should be able to go with a bit more RL-25 as well.

Thanks for posting the results...looks like I might I have buy another can of powder or two. I have a bit of a gap to fill with noting in between RL-22 and H870 !

Did you seat the Matrix bullets close to the rifling ? Marshall tells me that is where they shoot best.

The data from Berger is a little surprising...you would think that pushing a 130 @3000-3100 fps should be no trick.

A square's loaded ammo for 6.5-06 lists the 140 gr. partition at 3000 fps.
