6.5-06 vs 6.5-284

all the above mentioned are very good long range cartridges but the harder you push them the less barrel life you'll have... I shoot a 6.5 x 284 hard.. after having the barrel set back twice it still shoots bug holes.. The pisser is action length.. to long for a short action and short for a long action.. mines on a long action Sako.. next build is a 260 Rem and a short action 700

I get 3050 fps out of my 6.5x55 26#3 flutted barrel and 130g Nosler accubonds. Most loading data for the 6.5x55 is held to lower pressures due to the old model 96 mausers. In a modern bolt action you can load them to preform just below the 6.5-284. I have shot over 1500 rounds from one of my 6.5's with out any issues and it still drives tacks. The powder of choice in my 6.5's has been Varget.

I have been asking myself the same questions what 6.5 ? Well if speed and ease of start up are a consideration.I think a 264 win. mag. could be the answer,Brass and Dies over the counter. 140,s at 3200 no strain, actions that feed it readly available. Barrel life is OK for a hunting rifle. So no special order dies,no fireforming required, case cap. required for 3200 fps. Points to think about.
